Jazz In Town: A Little Bit Of Sun Ra

REYWhile the area is still awaiting the sun and warmth of spring, a member of the historic jazz group, Sun Ra Arkestra, will be performing in town on Saturday, May 3rd.  Reynold Scott, a Buffalo native as well as baritone and flute extraordinaire, will be making an appearance at PAUSA Art House beginning at 8pm.  Joining him will be the very talented jazz bassist Rishon Odel Northington and local drummer favorite Abdul Quadir.

Here is a brief bio of Rey Scott:

Reynold N. Scott is a musician, recording artist, teacher, and composer. He holds an MA in the Art of Music Education from CUNY/Herbert Lehman College, in the Bronx, NY. He also studied Theory of Counterpoint privately with internationally renowned musician and author Harold Knapik.

Scott is an adjunct professor in the Department of African American Studies at State University of New York at Buffalo. He is a designated Master Teaching Artist for Young Audiences of WNY, and he has had residencies in the Buffalo Public School teaching “Careers in Music” and “Art of Improvisation.”

Scott was commissioned by the Niagara Movement to compose a work for the 90th Annual Conference. He performs around the world frequently with the renowned Sun Ra Arkestra, and he has also performed with Tito Puente, Lionel Hampton, the New Brass Connection, Mack Rucks Ensemble and the Gospel Jubilee. He has traveled as far and wide as Ireland, Japan, Macedonia, the Netherlands, Poland and Portugal, as well as all over the United States.

 An important jazz event for Buffalo!  The Sun Ra Alumnus leads a newly formed group called The Sound Trio this Saturday.  Tickets $7/$5 students.

My Cousin Tone’ will be performing from 11am until 1pm for the MS Walk event to be held Saturday at the waterfront.

Becky Davis and the Jazz Birds will be at Gypsy Parlor Saturday beginning at 7pm.

The annual Lewiston Jazz and Pasta Fundraiser for the Lewiston Jazz Festival takes place at the Waterstreet Landing Sunday from 1pm to 6pm.  Performers include Gruvology, Caputi & Co., Mari McNeil, and Christina Custode.  Tickets are $25.

Matt Felski Quartet will be at the Roycroft Friday at 8pm with Wayne Moose, Tim Clarke, and Mike Jones.

The Jazz Example at the Anchor Bar Friday at 8pm.

Sol Y Sombra Saturday at the Anchor Bar at 8pm.

All Hands with John Bacon, Jr., George Staebell, and George Jones Saturday at Oliver’s Restaurant at 8:30pm.

The Mary McMahon Project with Mary McMahon, Bobby Jones, Mark Harris, and Tony Zambito at PAUSA Art House Thursday at 8pm.
