Jazz In Town: A Great Day In Buffalo

While we may not have national jazz luminaries in town, we have locals who give us the best in jazz.  This week is a real celebration of the Buffalo Jazz Community.  It is very fitting as well, coming during the week of Al Tinney’s birthday as we remember one Buffalo’s most revered jazz artist from our recent past.

What would mingus doOn Thursday, May 29th, the band voted in top 10 must see by Art Voice 2014 and best local music act 2013 by Buffalo Spree, What Would Mingus Do?, appears at Pausa Art House beginning at 8pm.  Led by Kelly Bucheger on saxophone, this band kicks it with lively originals, which are played with fresh arrangements each and every time.  Joining Kelly on this evening will be John Bacon Jr. on drums, Michael McNeil on piano, Tim Clarke on trumpet, and Greg Piontek on bass.  And, a must have CD is last year’s release of House of Relic.

A Great Day

This Saturday commemorates the taking of a photo last year, which emulated the famous Great Day in Harlem photo from 1958 featuring many jazz legends.  Walter Kemp was not only instrumental in organizing the A Great Day in Buffalo picture but also is helping to organized this spirited commemoration with the support of Jon Nelson of Pausa Art House.  The schedule, which celebrates our youth as well as local jazz artists, is as follows:

6:30 – 7:00pm Windermere Blvd. Elementary School 5th grade Jazz Band

8:00 – 9:00pm Buffalo Academy of the Performing and Visual Arts Jazz Ensemble

9:30 – whenever Collective and Collaborative performances by musicians in the house

A great day indeed for Buffalo Jazz!

Great day
