Jazz In Town: Big Band and Big Jazz Sounds!

While summer is winding down, the jazz is heating up.  Plenty of jazz is happening in WNY featuring superb talent and varieties.   From duos to big bands, the sounds of jazz will fill the streets and clubs of Buffalo.  Notable Jazz In Town performances to catch include:

For big band lovers, the Jim Tudini Big Band will be at St. Joe’s Church on Main Street near UB South Campus for its Dancing Under The Stars event this Sunday August 17th beginning at 7pm.  The band will feature Bobby Militello on sax as well as a host of talented musicians including Jim Tudini himself on sax.  Elena Cala will also be on vocals.  A summertime event!

Young pianist J.J. Wright is making an appearance at Iris Monday August 18th at 7pm with the J.J. Wright Trio in support of their new CD “Inward Looking Outward” with Nate Woods on drums and Ike Sturm on bass.  As the music director for Sacred Heart Parish on the campus of University of Notre Dame, J.J. Wright brings spiritual inspirations to his jazz compositions.  Here is a clip of the trio from 2012:

 

1069213_211925965630766_1563935852_nCarina and the Six String Preacher will be playing Lebro’s Saturday August 16th at 8:30pm.  This band offers a unique blend of European and American classic jazz with a Gypsy flavor featuring Vincent Mastrantonio on guitar and Carina Mastrantonio on vocals.  They are sure to be singing songs from their new CD entitled Liquid Think.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

RishonRishon Odel Northington will be hosting a night of improvisational performance for bass and African Drums this Thursday August 14th at Pausa Art House at 9pm.  Rishon is one of our most gifted jazz artist who currently tours with smooth jazz  and R&B artist Najee.

 

 

 

 

Lindsay hollandRick Holland’s Little Big Band featuring Lindsay Holland on vocals will be performing this Sunday August 17th at 300 Main Street in Brockport at 7pm.  Lindsay is an up and coming dynamic singer practicing the vocalize styling’s reminiscence of Jon Hendrick’s and Lambert, Hendrick’s, and Ross.  An art form, which cannot be lost!

University Heights Arts Association

This Saturday will be the first ever UHAA Festival and will feature arts and music throughout the day beginning at noon until 6pm.  The festival, being spearheaded by jazz guitarist and teacher Bernard Kunz, will close the event out with a performance in the evening by Gruvology – the fabulous jazz-fusion band.  For more information and scheduled events,visit the festival website.
