As we get into the holiday spirit, jazz will be getting into full swing. From the eclectic jazz of the legend Juini Booth visiting home to the big band sounds of Christmas songs hitting the cabaret lounge at MusicalFare.
Here is a run down of some of the notable Jazz In Town events taking place starting today:
At Pausa Art House, you can catch three special performances kicking off at 7pm. The first is chamber music Tonal Nuages with Kathleen Sherin. Followed at 8pm by the principal of the New York Philharmonic and UB Assistant Professor of Piano, Eric Huebner, in a solo performance of Gyorgi Litgeti's "Etudes for Solo Piano". Beginning at 9pm, the George Caldwell Trio with Danny Zeimann on bass and John Bacon, Jr. on drums takes the stage.
There will be a special benefit event this Friday beginning at 6:30pm called Jazz And U Night to raise awareness and funds for Multiple Sclerosis. The event will feature My Cousin Tone’ beginning at 6:30pm and have special guests Bernard Kunz on guitar as well as vocalist Einat Agmon sitting in for a couple of tunes. This performance will be followed by a unique ukulele jam session hosted by John Raddice and the Buffalo Ukulele Club. The event is free but donations gladly accepted with all proceed to go to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society and the MS Walk scheduled for May 2, 2015 on the Buffalo Waterfront.
There will be a special event at Nietzsche’s called “But I Thought You Said It Was Jazz” Friday beginning at 10pm and heading into the wee hours of the morning. It will feature the jazz bassist legend Juini Booth at 12:30am with Jeff Repeater and Joe Rozier. Before that jazz pianist extraordinaire David Kane will hit the stage beginning at 10pm with I am sure will be more great original compositions. See poster for more information and cover will be $5.
This Saturday, with two shows at 4pm and 8pm, you can see A Big Band Holiday at the cabaret lounge in MusicalFare, which will feature vocalist Katy Minor and an 8 piece big band. The big band will feature local jazz performers Phil Sims, Russ D’Alba, Harry Fackelman, Tom Kasperk, Paul Zapalowski, Mark Filsinger, and Ken Kurisack. The show will also be repeated on Sunday at 2pm. Tickets are $25 and can be reserved at the MusicalFare box office. A big Christmas show with stellar musicians and a great singer.
Look for Carina and the Six String Preacher at Pausa Art House beginning at 8pm this Saturday for some gypsy style and soulful jazz. Here is a neat video appropriately entitled for this time of year – Cabin Fever:
