Bernard Kunz and Walter Kemp III, the creative duo behind the hit jazz-fusion band Gruvology, put on an intimate duo show last night at the Daily Planet. And, it was fabulously intimate and inspiring.
Performing originals from their recently released CD, Freeway, you got the sense you were on a relaxing two-hour road trip with this duo. The sounds were a mix of fusion, smooth jazz, concerto piano, and world music syncopations on guitar.
Highlight of the night were the solo performances by each in the duo. Walter Kemp III played an original inspired by the great hymnal song, How Great Thou Art. Very moving it was. The solo by Bernard Kunz was an interpretation inspired by several songs literally – together in fusion – blended in a way where all of Kunz’s talent was on display.
Hats off to jazz musician and fan, Mike Caputi, on his recently opened coffee and food establishment – the Daily Planet. Caputi’s musical knowledge meant he had a vision of creating the right ambiance with superb sound to enhance the experience of great coffee with great music.
