Jazz In Town: Jazz Springs Back To Life!

As the weather finally breaks, jazz is springing back to life!

As the smell and sounds of spring come to life, so does the sound of jazz.  From Latin jazz to mainstream as well as the eclectic, jazz can be heard throughout WNY.

Here are a rundown of just some of the Jazz In Town events you can find this week, in the next week, and more:

Jazz In Town

Gerald Albright comes to town.  As part of the Great Performer Series, Gerald Albright will appear at the Performing Arts Center at Rockwell Hall on the campus of Buffalo State College.  Tickets are $35 – $40 and go to buffalostatepac.org to order.  The much-heralded smooth jazz and mainstream jazz artist makes an appearance sure to be entertaining.  Here is a clip of Gerald Albright’s latest composition Slam dunk and his insights behind the music:

 

Noche latinaNoche Latina, a trio featuring Kevin Doyle on piano, Ben Levitt on bass, and Joe Gonzalez on drums performs Latin Classics and Jazz at Pausa Art House Thursday April 9th beginning at 8pm

 

 

Alfie and Phil at Merge_2On Friday April 10th, catch the duo of Phil Sims on trombone and vocals and Alfie Alessandra on guitar and vocals at the Saigon Café on Elmwood beginning at 9pm.

 

 

See the Jazz Example, led by Doug “Trigger” Gaston on piano, this Friday beginning at 8pm at the Anchor Bar with Bilal Abdul on sax, Greg Piontek on bass, Lester Robinson on drums, and Chuck Buffamonte on guitar. 

Jordana

On Friday April 10th with doors opening at 5pm, smooth jazz vocalist Jordana Talsky will appear at the Iris Maple Entertainment Complex.  Tickets $25 day of the show.  

 

 

 

 

 

At 3:30pm on Saturday you can catch All Hands at Oliver’s Restaurant

Sol Y Sombra will be at the Anchor Bar at 7pm on Saturday

Carina and 6Carina and The Six String Preacher will perform at Pausa Art House Saturday April 11 beginning at 8pm.  This talented Jazz Noir group brings a unique sound.

 

 

 

Katy PromoSaturday, April 11 beginning at 9pm at the Saigon Café, see the Katy Miner Trio with Katy Miner on vocals, Phil Sims on piano, and Paul Zapalowski on bass. 

 

 

 

 

On Monday, you can see the Odyssey Jazz Ensemble at the Central Park Grill at 6:30pm

The Bobby Militello Quartet will be at the Bijou Grille on Tuesday April 14th beginning at 7pm with Bobby Jones, John Bacon Jr., and Jim Colemon.

Colleen-williams-photoWednesday Night Jazz, led by bassist Wayne Moose, will feature Colleen Williams on vocals and Bobby Jones on piano on Wednesday, April 15th at 6:30pm at Mezza Restaurant on Elmwood Avenue.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

On Wednesday, April 15 at 7:30pm, you can catch the Gerard/Chamberlain Quartet with vocalist Cheryl Ferris at Mason's Grille.

Student Recitals

Legendary Pat Martino

Pat martinoThe Pat Martino Trio will be making a rare appearance in Buffalo on Sunday, April 19th beginning at 7pm at Buffalo Iron Works.  Joining Pat Martino will be Buffalo’s native son Carmen Intorre on drums, and Pat Bianchi on organ.  Pat Martino is one of the legendary jazz masters of our time, whose influence on jazz today is widespread.  He has played with the greats, including Chick Corea, Sonny Stitt, Gene Ammons, and organist Jack McDuff.   A rare jazz treat for Buffalo!  Here is a video from this trio with nice closeups of each and Carmen Intorre's musicality on cymbals:

 

 Upcoming

JazzBuffalo will be hosting Sunday Jazz Series at 189 Main in East Aurora beginning in May.  The events will take place from 4pm until 7:30pm every third week of the month from May until September.  Stay tuned for more news.

Pete Will Anderson MF.001Pete and Will Anderson Trio will be making a stop in Buffalo on their national tour May 19th at Premier Cabaret at MusicalFare Theatre. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Don't Forget

Joe baudo Every Tuesday at the Sportmen's Tavern, the Joe Baudo Big Band comes to life from 12 noon until 2pm.  Featuring some of the best who have performed in Buffalo throughout the years.  In this photo you see BMHF trumpeter Joe Parisi taking a solo.
