An early edition of Jazz In Town because there is plenty of great jazz happening in WNY!
Just like Buffalo weather can go from winter to summer in a matter of a day, jazz in Buffalo can go from just a few events to a platter full week to week. May is shaping up to be a blossoming spring of momentous events happening throughout Greater Buffalo.
Jazz In Town
End of the college semester. One of our gifted young students is jazz vocalist Lindsey Holland of Buffalo State. She will be holding her senior recital Thursday May 7, at 5:30pm in Rockwell Hall. She will be joined by more young talent in Harry Graser, piano, Ben Levitt, bass, and Candice Thomas, drums. Lindsey is a gifted young woman in the art of jazz vocalese.
The Villa Maria Jazz Ensemble performs Thursday May 7 at 7pm in their year-end recital at Villa Maria College.
Look for the duo of Janice Mitchell and Jim Beishline at Merge Thursday May 7 beginning at 7pm
Mark Filsinger’s Eleventet hits Pausa Art House Thursday May 7 at 8pm with a host of some venerable jazz players doing original compositions. Includes Bobby Militello, Dave Schiavone, Harry Fackelman, Rick Fleming, John Hasselbeck, Jim Bohm, and Bobby Jones – to name just a few!
EPQ: Ellen Pieroni Quartet, another of our young and upcoming jazz groups will be doing a tribute to Herbie Hancock on Thursday May 7 beginning at 9pm with Ellen Pieroni – Sax, Anthony Henry – Bass, Harry Graser – Keys, and Colin Sperrazza – drums. But wait, the Jon Lehning Sextet will also be joining them with Jon Lehning – Sax, Derek Hager – Sax ,Jared Tinkham – Guitar, Harry Graser – Keys, Anthony Henry – Bass, and Erik Hallmark – Drums. A roster of the young and emerging jazz artists in Buffalo!
Nick Finzer will be having a CD Release event at Pausa Art House Friday, May 8 beginning at 8pm. The Chase showcases one of the up and coming stars in jazz on trombone. The Eastman and Juilliard trained Finzer is one of NYC's hottest rising stars, winner of a 2015 Herb Alpert Award for young composers by American Society of Composers, Authors & Publishers (ASCAP) . On Friday May 8 at 8pm, see the Jazz Example led by Doug "Trigger" Gaston on piano at their weekly gig at the Anchor Bar with Greg Pointek, bass, Tim Clark, Trumpet, Dave Schiavone, sax, and Benjamin Clyburn, drums.
On Friday May 8 you can also catch the duo of Warren Stirtzinger and Phil Sims at the Saigon Café beginning at 9:00pm.
On Saturday May 9 at 3:30pm, you can catch All Hands at Oliver's Restaurant
On Saturday, May 9, see Sol Y Sombra at 8pm at their weekly gig at the Anchor Bar.
The Joanna Batt Trio will be at the Saigon Café on Saturday May 8 beginning at 9pm with Jack Kulp on bass and Phil Sims on piano.
The Jon Lehning Quartet will open up the CMC Jam beginning Sunday May 10th at 6pm at the Historic Colored Musicians Club.
On Tuesday, May 12th you can catch the Phil Sims Quartet with singer Katy Miner beginning at 7pm.
Wednesday Night Jazz With Wayne Moose. This Wednesday is a cool jazz guitarist night of Warren Stirtzinger and George Kane. Taking place, Wednesday, May 6 beginning at 6:30pm at Mezza Restaurant.
JazzBuffalo will be hosting Sunday Jazz Series at 189 Main in East Aurora beginning in May. The events will take place from 4pm until 7:30pm every third week of the month from May until September. Stay tuned for more news.
National artists Pete and Will Anderson Trio will be making a stop in Buffalo on their national tour May 19th at Premier Cabaret at MusicalFare Theatre. Get out and support national jazz performers coming to Buffalo!
