Despite the weather, this is a week to get “organized” around the jazz scene. JazzBuffalo Poll winners, mentions, and nominees will all be in action performing. And, we will see the return of jazz artists to the scene who have not played recently. There is plenty to get excited about and plenty to take in!
The Bobby Militello Tribute to Dave Brubeck takes place on Saturday, January 16th beginning at 8 pm at MusicalFare Theatre. It will feature Militello’s long time quartet collaborators Jim Colemon on bass, Bobby Jones on piano, and John Bacon, Jr. on drums. This is another partnered event brought to you by JazzBuffalo and MusicalFare Theatre that began in 2015 and this a spectacular way to start off 2016.
JazzBuffalo Poll winners for Best Big Band, Mark Filsinger’s Eleventet, is back at it on Thursday, January 14 at 8 pm at PAUSA Art House. This band packs a powerful line-up of Bobby Militello, Andrew Weinzler, Harry Fackleman, Jim Bohm, Tim Clarke, John Hasselback, Jr., Dr. Rick Fleming, Bobby Jones, Jim Colemon, and Devin Kelly. The band also took most memorable performance in 2015 and I am sure their first performance in 2016 will be just as memorable.
The Walt Sopicki Trio makes it debut at Pausa Art House on Friday, January 15th at 8 pm. Guitarist Walt Sopicki will be joined by Bobby Jones on piano/keyboard/organ and John Bacon Jr. on drums. Sopicki's new CD B3X3 features Joey DeFrancesco and he delivers to the audience the soulful sound of B3 Hammond groove.
The Greg Millar Trio with special guest Rey Scott on saxophone makes its first showing at Pausa Art House on Saturday, January 16th at 8 pm. Greg Millar has been a “Buffalo Great” for several decades and also toured with the fantastic Charles Earland at the height of the B3 Hammond organ player’s fame. Joining Millar and Scott will be Ron Paterson on organ and Abdul-Rahman Qadir on drums.

The BPO will be doing an event called Orchestra Meets Jazz on Thursday, January 21st beginning at 7 pm, which include a five-piece combo from the club. Afterwards, check out the George Scott Big Band in the Mary Seaton Room.
