Jazz In Town: The City Gets Jazz Visitors

The month of June usually marks the return of jazz musicians to the Buffalo area.  This June is no exception as we welcome home several Buffalo area-born jazz artists.

Highlights

Bobby Previte and The Visitors, Saturday, June 11th  at 8 pm at Pausa Art House

Small-Previte-Band-01-1024x682Drummer and musician extraordinaire in improvisational music drawing influences from jazz, rock, and other genres, Bobby Previte, returns to Buffalo.  Making a special appearance at Pausa Art House, Previte’s latest project introduces us to some of the stars of tomorrow from the Brooklyn scene: Mike Gamble, guitar, Michael Kammers, saxophone, piano, and organ, and Kurt Kotheimer, bass. 

 

Janice Mitchell/Jim Beishline: The Premier Jazz Duo Series, Sunday, June 12th at 6 pm at MusicalFare Theatre

CabaretJazz DuoThe kick-off of the Premier Cabaret Jazz Duo Series happens Sunday, June 12th with the dynamic couple and duo of Janice Mitchell on vocals and Jim Beishline on piano.  Tickets are $10 so reserve seats.  Walk-up tickets will be available the day of the show also. 

 

 

 

 

The Original Buffalo Brass Big Band the New Buffalo Brass Big Band, Monday, June 13th  at 7 pm at the Sportsmen Tavern

Buffalo brass bandPhil Sims returns home to lead an event that will showcase some of the original members of the Buffalo Brass Big Band, formed in 1985.  And, segue into performances by newer members of the Buffalo Brass Big Band.  A list of who’s who in Buffalo jazz is simply too long to list here.  The two big bands will certainly be star-packed!  Tickets are $20. 

 

 

Elliott Scozzaro 5tet, Thursday, June 9th at 8 pm at Pausa Art House

Elliott soczzaroThe young alto saxophonist, home from his studies in Texas, leads a quintet that includes Matt Michaud on guitar, home for a visit from Denver, CO.  The group is rounded out by Jim Colemon on bass, John Bacon, Jr. on drums, and includes Joey Skoch on piano – who comes by way of Chicago with a string of impressive performances since graduating in 2014.

 

 

 

 

 

East Aurora Music Festival, Saturday, June 11th beginning at 3:30pm

This festival includes a variety of music.  Including jazz with the East Aurora residents – the Hasselback family – performing jazz at the Roycroft Inn Tent  Also look for The Hot Club of Buffalo there as well – who will part of the JazzBuffalo/189 Sunday Jazz Series in East Aurora this year.

On Wednesday, June 8th at 9 pm at Nietzsche’s you can catch the Frontstreet Men with Ian Adelstein, Guitar, Dave Pinchoff, Organ, and Stephen Lattimore, Drums

On Wednesday, June 8th see Rick Strauss and on June 15th for Wednesday Night Jazz at Mezza beginning at 6:30 pm see Cindy Miller from Rochester.

On Thursday, June 9th at 7 pm at Merge you can catch the Hot Trad 5 with Phil Sims, Mark Filsinger, Jared Tinkham, Candace Thomas, and Ben Levitt 

On Friday, June 10th you can catch the Bobby Militello Quartet at GiGi’s in Kenmore at 8 pm 

On Saturday, June 11th at 2 pm at the Confetti Cottage in Niagara Falls vocalist Barbara Levy Daniels performs with Krista Seddon (Keyboard), Abdul Qadir (Drums) and Ben Levitt (Bass). Picnic foods available for purchase.

On Saturday, June 11th at Hot Mama’s Canteen beginning at 1 pm you can see Jules Kittsley and the Vibraphones for Beats and Brunch. 

On Wednesday, June 15th at 7:30 pm at Mason's Grille in Hamburg see the Ray Chamberlain / Frank Gerard Quartet featuring Cheryl Ferris on vocals.

Beginning in this month of May and through the summer, Nietzsche’s on Allen will host a Summer Happy Hour Series on Mondays from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm.  Click on the photo for the schedule of the dates and performers throughout the summer

See Kevin Doyle led Sol Y Sombra, Latin jazz, at the Anchor Bar on Saturday’s beginning at 8pm.

A reminder that the Joe Baudo Big Band performs every Tuesday at the Sportsmen Tavern from 12 pm to 2 pm.

  Wk 3 ohThe Walter Kemp 3 Oh group will be having a special CD Release concert performance on June 17th at Hallwalls.  The band features Walter Kemp III on the piano, Rishon O'Del Nothington on bass, and David Teaspoon Hulett on drums.

Hard Bop Project at 189Next up for the JazzBuffalo / 189 Sunday Jazz Series on Sunday, June 26 is The Hard Bop Project and a focus on the music of Lou Donaldson and Gene Ammons with Kelly Bucheger, Tim Clarke, Tommy Paladino, Sabu Adeyola, Abdul-Rahman Qadir, and Tony Zambito.
