Jazz In Town: Remembering Songs For Our Fathers

Special performances are taking place throughout the Greater Buffalo area as we celebrate Father’s Day on June 19th.  We are bound to hear jazz, in one form or another, that brings us memories of our Fathers on this noted day. 

Highlights

Walter Kemp 3oh! CD Release, Friday, June 17th  at 8 pm at Hallwalls

Wk 3 ohThe trio of Walter Kemp, III on piano, Rishon Odel Northington on bass, and David Teaspoon Hulett have set out to push the boundaries of jazz music.  Incorporating the influences of hip-hop, R&B, gospel, and contemporary jazz.  The trio was recently signed to the Blujazz recording label for its upcoming release, entitled “Dark Continent”, which include originals and arrangements of standards, as well.   Tickets are $15 and $20 (with CD).  Exciting for the trio and for Buffalo!

 

 

 

 

 

 

The Calvin Parmer Quintet, Saturday, June 18th at 8 pm at Pausa Art House

Calvin parmerR&B recording bassist Calvin Parmer (i.e. Janelle Monae and Jazmine Sullivan) leads a talented cast of musicians for a night of jazz, pop, and funk.  Joining Calvin Parmer will be Toney Rhodes on piano/keyboards, Taveem Gibson on piano/vocals, Damone Jackson on drums, Will Holton on sax, and Jim Bohm on trumpet – with Einat Agmon and Sheree Halton on vocals.  Certainly a talented group of folks here!

 

Ralph Fava Trio, Friday, June 17th at 8 pm at Pausa Art House

Ralph fava trioOne of the area’s premier jazz guitarists returns for a date at Pausa Art House. The Berklee pedigree and first-call performer at the Seneca Casino will be joined by Bud Fadale on bass and Dan Hull on drums.

On Wednesday, June 15th at 7:30 pm at Mason's Grille in Hamburg see the Ray Chamberlain / Frank Gerard Quartet featuring Cheryl Ferris on vocals.

 

John baconOn Wednesday, June 15th at 9 pm at Nietzsche’s see John Bacon and the Jazz Current with John Bacon on drums (and 2015 JazzBuffalo Jazz Artist of the Year), Danny Ziemann on bass, Brian Tervo on sax (from Rochester), Matt Michaud on guitar, Alec Dube on vibes, and Alexandra McArthur on vocals. 

 

 

 

On Saturday, June 18th at 10:30 am at The Lodge for lunch/brunch you can see JazzLine with Dennis Warner and Jennie Jones

On Saturday, June 11th at Hot Mama’s Canteen beginning at 1 pm you can see The Duo + with Ellen Pieroni and Donny Frauenhofer for Beats and Brunch. 

On Sunday, June 19th at the Birchfield Center in West Seneca you can catch My Cousin Tone’ from Noon to 2 pm as part of the Father’s Day Celebration taking place at the center.

On Tuesday, June 21st at 7 pm at Shannon's Pub you can catch River Dogs Dixieland Jazz Band

On Tuesday, June 21st at Dreamland at 8 pm see the free jazz artists duo of Chris Corsano on drums and Steve Backzkowski on saxophone for spirited free jazz music.

Neitzche's monday happy hourThis month summer, Nietzsche’s on Allen will host a Summer Happy Hour Series on Mondays from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm.  Click on the photo for the schedule of the dates and performers throughout the summer
