See Sophisticated Ladies As Jazz Meets Theatre
Checked out MusicalFare Theatre production of Sophisticated Ladies. A fine production – one that should be looked at as a musical revue of Duke Ellington as opposed to a traditional musical play. Strong female vocals throughout by Zoe Scruggs, Annette Christian, Katy Miner, and Cecelia Barron. Barron has matured into a beautiful presence on the stage with her singing, dancing, comedic, and acting capabilities. Dudney Joseph Jr. also has matured into a dynamic presence on the stage over the years with his vocals, acting, and light on the feet movements. London Lee and Ben Michael Moran round out a cast offering one Ellington hit after another with inventive choreography by John Fredo. The music direction of George Caldwell was fast paced and timing on the mark with each song entrance. Drummer Rodney Harper was in the rightful place of front and center – great chops and impeccable pacing – needed for a show like this. John Hasselback shined on trombone and his sound towered on top of songs in a way that gave the Ellington big band feel despite just 6-pieces. Ellington fans should check it out. Expect to hear a musical revue with all the familiar Ellington tunes like A Train, Solitude, Cotton Tail, Satin Doll, and of course Sophisticated Ladies. Jazz Meets Theatre At Its Finest.
