Jazz In Town: Experience Great Jazz!

Keeping jazz awareness prominent in the future means looking back at special moments in jazz.  There will be performances in the upcoming week that look at special music in jazz history.

Highlights

JazzBuffalo Presents The CTI Experience, Friday, September 8 at 8 pm at Pausa Art House 

Cti experience disc.001JazzBuffalo presents the CTI Experience, a music concept devoted to the spirit of the iconic jazz label from '70's founded by Creed Taylor. The CTI Experience will focus on the music of Freddie Hubbard, Stanley Turrentine, George Benson, Hubert Laws and many of the CTI Records greats. The CTI Experience will feature Harry Graser on piano, Jack Kulp on bass, Devin Kelly on drums, Rick Strauss on guitar, Dave Schiavone on sax, Tim Clarke on trumpet, John Hasselback, Jr. on trombone, and Tony Zambito on percussion.  For this night, the music of Freddie Hubbard and Stanley Turrentine will be highlighted.  This night represents only the third-time this ensemble has presented the CTI Experience.

JazzBuffalo Presents The Midnight Blue Experience, Saturday, September 9 at 8 pm at Pausa Art House

Midnight blue pausa 9 9.001Cited by critics as one of the top jazz albums of all time, Kenny Burrell's 1963 recording Midnight Blue is a singular side that helped define the Blue Note sound.

On Saturday, September 9th JazzBuffalo presents The Midnight Blue Experience returns to Pausa Art House after their long hiatus since October 2016. The group will feature guitarist George Kane on guitar, Dave Schiavone on sax, Wayne Moose on bass, Devin Kelly on drums, and Tony Zambito on percussion in a performance dedicated to the iconic Blue Note album Midnight Blue and Kenny Burrell. This will surely be an unforgettable evening of jazz honoring the legend Kenny Burrell and the Blue Note sound. Don't miss the return of The Midnight Blue Experience!

Hallwalls Presents Tom Rainey Trio w/ Mary Halvorson and Ingrid Laubrock, Friday, September 8 at 8 pm at Allen Street Hardware Back Room

Tom rainey trioFor free jazz fans, Hallwalls brings in a unique trio of forerunners in the free jazz and avant-garde jazz movement.  Tom Rainey is on drums, Mary Halvorson on guitar, and Ingrid Laubrock on saxophone.  Mary Halvorson has garnered attention as a highly regarded free jazz guitarists.  The trio’s music is heavy with free jazz improvisations and unstructured journeys.  For more information visit Hallwalls web site.  Here is a clip of the trio where you can get a sense of their free jazz collaboration:

 

Jazz In Town

Jazz at Temple Beth Zion begins on Thursday, September 7 at 7 pm where the Buffalo Jazz Collective Sextet will perform the music of Harold Arlen as part of the new Jewish American Songbook Series.  The BJCS will feature Bobby Militello, alto, Mark Filsinger, trumpet, John Hasselback, trombone, George Caldwell, piano, Jim Colemon, bass, and 
John Bacon, drums

Versatile vocalist in jazz, blues, and country DeeAnn DiMeo Tompkins makes her debut at Pausa Art House on Thursday, September 7 at 7 pm with Stu Weissman guitar, Avery Weissman bass, Reggie Evans drums, and Jason Moyinhan sax

On Saturday, September 9 the JazzBuffalo and Hollow Bistro First Saturday Jazz Brunch takes place with Dave Scott on guitar and Wayne Moose on bass beginning at 11:30 am.  Be sure to call for your reservations at 716-759-7351

On Saturday, September 9 at Mr. Bill's at 7 pm you can catch Custode and Parisi.  

Not exactly jazz but features Ron Davis on organ supporting singer Maria Sebastian in her tribute to Patsy Cline and Roseanne Cash on Sunday, September 10 at 4 pm at the Sportsmen Tavern

Moules Fest IV takes place at Coco Bar on Monday, September 11 through Wednesday, September 13 and the French ConeXion will be providing the jazz music

Upcoming

Carnegie Art center thursday.001The Carnegie Arts Center in North Tonawanda enters the second year of presenting a jazz series.  The Thursday Jazz Series begins on Thursday, September 14th at 7 pm with Bobby Militello and continues through November 9.  Admission is $10.  The lineup will feature Sharon Bailey, Jon Lehning, Mark Filsinger, Carina and the Six String PReacher, and The Fredown Stompers.

On September 22 and 23rd, the Pappy Martin Legacy Jazz Society is planning 2 days of events celebrating the birthday of John Coltrane at the Burchfield Penney Museum.  Special guests scheduled to appear are saxophonist J.D. Allen, bassist Curtis Lundy, Sirius XM's Eulis Cathey, and a special appearance interview with jazz legend Jimmy Heath.  Including another showing of the John Coltrane documentary.  Look for more but for now, go to burchfieldpenney.org for times and tickets.

On September 29th, Jazz At The Lincoln Center Orchestra With Wynton Marsalis will be at the UB Center for the Arts.  Be sure to visit the UB Center For the Arts Website for tickets for this event – here: JLCO.

JazzBuffalo Presents The Hotel Henry Jazz Concert Series

JazzBuffalo Presents International Jazz Artists

In the fall on Saturday, October 21, JazzBuffalo will be presenting, in association with Pausa Art House, the Julliard, New York City-based, and highly-regarded Grammy Nominee jazz pianist Elio Villafranca.  Joining Villafranca as special guest will be the heavily touted Brownman Ali on trumpet, whose forays into jazz and hip-hop are well documented.  The ensemble will also feature Sabu Adeyola on bass and Sean Jefferson on drums with an exciting appearance by the Cuban-born percussionist Vladimir Espinosa.  This concert will be a special part of the Jazz 100 Festival to be held October 19, 20, and 21 with a special tribute to Dizzy Gillespie.  Get your reserved seats here: Elio Villafranca

Presented by JazzBuffalo, the dynamic The Amos Hoffman/Noam Lemish Quartet will be making a rare appearance in Buffalo on Sunday, November 26 at Pausa Art House for two shows at 3 pm and 6 pm. In 2013 Amos Hoffman was awarded one of Israel’s most prestigious prizes – The Landau Prize for Arts and Sciences for outstanding achievement in the field of Jazz. The quartet performs unique jazz arrangements of traditional Israeli and Jewish songs with Hoffman n the traditional Oud.  In addition, they perform hard swing jazz music.  Get your reserved seats here:  Hoffman/Lemish 3 pm or Hoffman/Lemish 6 pm

Jazz 100 Festival

In October, JazzBuffalo and Pausa Art House will team to host the Jazz 100 Festival running on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday 10/19 to 10/2.   The festival will celebrate the 100th birthdays of Ella Fitzgerald, Thelonious Monk, and Dizzy Gillespie.  Stay tuned for more details.  On Thursday 10/19, the Mary McMahon Project will do a tribute to Ella Fitzgerald, Friday 10/20 Star People will shift focus from Miles Davis and do a special tribute to Thelonious Monk, and on Saturday the above-mentioned appearance by Elio Villafranca will conclude the festival with a tribute to Dizzy Gillespie and Mongo Santamaria.

Albright-Knox Art Gallery Announces Art Of Jazz Lineup

AOJ.001Posted recently was the announcement of the 2017/2018 Art of Jazz Series at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.  The announcement is viewable here:  Art of Jazz.  The series welcomes back the founding producer Bruce Eaton this coming season.  It will be a privilege and honor to be stepping in as series associate producer to assist in producing Art of Jazz and bringing to Buffalo the best in jazz.  And, the best is coming with the 2017/2018 series to include Bill Frisell, Monty Alexander, Billy Childs, and Melissa Aldana.  Go here for tickets:  AOJ
