Jazz In Town: Celebrating Song And The Birthday Of Django!

Jazz will hit several stages in the next week and the variety of jazz music means there is something for everyone!

DeeAnn With Love Featuring DeeAnn DiMeo Tompkins and RiShon Odel & The Fifth Element, Friday, January 19 at 8 pm at Smith’s Theatre

Byron Stripling And The BPO, Saturday, January 20 at 8 pm at Kleinhans Music Hall

On Saturday, January 20 you can see noted trumpeter and singer Byron Stripling at BPO/Kleinhans Music Hall in a tribute to Duke and Ella – in the video below see Stripling in a Philharmonic setting.  Stripling brings his entertaining style of trumpet performance and vocals to the Kleinhans stage.  He will be joined by vocalist Carmen Bradford and tap dancing legend Ted Louis Levy.  (JazzBuffalo Email Subscribers can use a special 20 percent discount of CLUB20 on tickets – thank you to the BPO for providing JazzBuffalo subscribers a discount!) Django Reinhardt Birthday Buffalo, Tuesday, January 23 at 7 pm at Thin Man Brewery

Django Reinhardt is considered the undisputed originator and master of the jazz music and art form we call today "gypsy jazz". This year, Tuesday, January 23 will represent the 107th birthday of this legendary figure in the history of jazz. Join JazzBuffalo, in association with Thin Man Brewery as we feature three of Buffalo's most talented groups who honor the tradition of Django Reinhardt and gypsy jazz. The event will feature The Hot Club of Buffalo, French ConéXion, and Carina & The Six String Preacher in an evening dedicated to the jazz art form we call gypsy jazz. Fans of gypsy jazz are encouraged to come out and those who want to experience gypsy jazz – this an event you do not want to miss! Buffalo is one of the few cities in the U.S. to have stellar groups who practice this unique art form in jazz!

Jazz In Town

On Thursday, January 18 at 7 pm at Pausa Art House you can catch the Joe Goretti Electric Quartet for modern jazz sounds with Jon Lehning on sax, Anthony Henry on bass, and Harry Graser on keyboards/synth.

On Friday, January 19 at 7 pm for Jazz Night at Buffalo Distilling Company you can see Dozo My Lady with vocalist Carolyn Lansom.

On Friday, January 19 at 8 pm at Pausa Art House Star People: The Music of Miles Davis returns for another of their monthly concerts, which usually includes a mix of Buffalo and Rochester players. 

On Saturday, January 20 at 12:00 pm at Sportsmen Tavern, Tim Clarke’s Soul-Tet takes the stage of an afternoon matinee of jazz and features Tim Clarke, Darryl Washington, Ed Croft, Nelson Rivera, and Harry Graser.

On Saturday, January 20 at 6 pm at Hot Momma Canteen you can see the jazz instrumental guitar duo of Drew Azzinaro and Jason Beaudreau

Through JazzBuffalo's partnership with MusicalFare Theatre, Mark Filsinger's Eleventet was introduced to the MusicalFare Theatre Premier Cabaret.  They make another appearance on Saturday, January 20 at 8 pm.  Tickets $25 and available on MusicalFare Theatre website.  Just a few seats remain.

On Saturday, January 20 at 8 pm catch Volver at Pausa Art House, which presents a mix of South American, Eastern European, and Klezmer jazz music.  Volver will feature Jeremy Spindler – accordion, Kyle Ohlson – clarinet, flute, Mike Laudico – bass, and Jamie Sunshine – drums

Albright-Knox Art Gallery Art Of Jazz Series

Next up in the series is one of the true jazz piano legends of our time, Monty Alexander.  His career is highlighted by more than 70 recordings as a leader as well as work with artists including Frank Sinatra, Dizzy Gillespie, Tony Bennett, Ray Brown, and Quincy Jones. Set aside Sunday, January 28 at 3 pm for what will surely be a concert to remember. The first concert sold-out and this one will surely do so as well. Get your tickets soon here: Monty Alexander – Art of Jazz.  Alexander will be performing with two very notable sidemen.  (Hassan) J.J. It is certainly not too soon to also get your tickets for Grammy Nominated pianist Billy Childs (March 18) and the fast-rising star in jazz Melissa Aldana (April 21) appearing at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery Art of Jazz Series.  Get tickets here: AOJ 

The popular First Saturday Jazz Brunch presented by JazzBuffalo and The Hollow Bistro returns on Saturday, February 3rd with the JazzBuffalo John Hunt Jazz Artist of the Year winner Dave Schiavone on sax and George Kane on guitar.  Call the Hollow Bistro at 716-759-7351 to reserve your jazz brunch spot!

The Carnegie Arts Center Thursday Night Jazz Concert Series, promoted and supported by JazzBuffalo, will begin once again February 8 at 7 pm with Live Music & Live Art:  A jazz performance by The Pinnavaia/Mastrantonio Duo and simultaneous sketch session by members of the Buffalo Society of Artists.  Look for the full schedule soon!

On Saturday, February 10th you can see the noted and highly regarded jazz bassist Petros Klampanis and his group at the UB Center for the Arts.  (Described by JazzTimes as a "formidable bassist and composer," Petros Klampanis grew up in Greece, surrounded by the confluence of the Mediterranean and Balkan folk music. He studied classical and jazz music in Athens, Amsterdam and New York. JazzBuffalo Poll Celebration Featuring The Blue Note 8 – Monday, January 29

We will use this special evening as a celebration of the JazzBuffalo Poll results!  The event takes place on Monday, January 29 from 7 pm to 9 pm at The Screening Room Cinema and Cafe.  It will feature the Blue Note 8, consisting of several JazzBuffalo Poll winners, with Dave Schiavone on sax, Lisa Hasselback on keyboards, Tim Clarke on trumpet, John Hasselback, Jr. on trombone, George Kane on guitar, Bud Fadale on bass, Tony Zambito on percussion, and John Bacon, Jr. on drums in an evening of performing classic Blue Note jazz tunes.  We will use the night as an opportunity to recognize the winners of the JazzBuffalo Poll and enjoy a jazz community celebration!

JazzWednesday @ The Screening Room Begins In February

Last week, we announced JazzMonday for every last Monday of the month only to discover a conflict with other events taking place on Mondays.  JazzBuffalo and The Screening Room decided to move the jazz concert events to the last Wednesday of the month.  We are now introducing – JazzWedensday @ The Screening Room.  Look for more details soon.  

Hotel Henry Jazz Concert Series Will Return

JazzBuffalo and the Hotel Henry convened recently to plan for the 2018 Hotel Henry Jazz Concert Series.  Concerts will begin once monthly in March and consist of a variable week or day plus special events.  There have been many inquiries regarding the series thus JazzBuffalo and the Hotel Henry are pleased to announce the series will return.  Stay tuned for more details in the near future.
