Jazz In Town: Appreciating Drea d’Nur and Supporting Northwest Jazz Festival

April Is Jazz Appreciation Month celebration is in full swing!  And, there is a lot to appreciate!  The resurging jazz scene in Buffalo means plenty of super jazz to appreciate!

JazzBuffalo Presents International Jazz Vocalist Drea d’Nur Saturday, April 14th at 8 pm at Pausa Art House

Drea dnur with logoJazzBuffalo, in association with Pausa Art House, presents our first-ever Artist-in-Residence especially for "April is Jazz Appreciation Month". International vocalist, pianist, and Buffalo native Drea d'Nur will be the featured artist on Saturday, April 14th, and Saturday, April 21st for two riveting performances. This dynamic vocalist melds jazz, blues, spiritual, protest, R&B, and love songs into powerful pieces that touch the soul. Drea d'Nur is the creator of the musical reviews "The Spirit of Nina Simone", which was performed at Kleinhans Music Hall, and "Dear Nina: A Sonic Love Letter to Nina Simone". She has also recorded the highly celebrated CD "Day of d'Nur."

Drea d’Nur's work has gained national and international praise. Her local work highlights the rich history of Black music and art in Buffalo. She is the 2017 Spark Awards Artist of the Year and has performed overseas, released two independent music projects, produced two short films about Nina Simone, directed a music video, and has album credits on the new Gorillaz album, HUMANZ.

This is a rare opportunity to hear Drea d'Nur in an intimate setting. She'll be joined by her musical friends. These dates are sure to be two powerful and memorable musical experiences. Here is a glimpse of Drea d’Nur powerful music in this moving video:

Support Northwest Jazz Festival Fundraiser

The annual Taste of Jazz Fundraiser for the Northwest Jazz Festival in Lewiston, NY will take place on Sunday, April 15th from 4 pm to 8 pm at the Brickyard Brewery on Center Street.  Great food and music that will feature sneak previews with Paul Hage Mirage, The Hot Club of Buffalo, and the Jon Lehning Trio.  Proceeds help to keep the festival FREE folks!  So come out to support!!

Jazz In Town

On Thursday, April 12th at 7 pm at the Carnegie Arts Center you can see the Buffalo Jazz Composers Workshop perform their brand of original jazz music. 

On Thursday, April 12th at 7:30 pm at Pausa House you can see a beyond jazz performance as classical guitarist Richard Saeb performs music inspired in the Folklore of Latin America (Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Paraguay, and Cuba), these pieces aren't folkloric songs, but pieces inspired by traditional music like tangos and choruses.

On Friday, April 13th at 8 pm the Rhythm Future Quartet returns to Buffalo to perform at Buffalo Iron Works.  This stellar gypsy jazz group performed for JazzBuffalo last year to a sold-out audience at MusicalFare Theatre Cabaret Lounge.  Opening for them will be Buffalo's premier gypsy jazz band – The Hot Club of Buffalo.

On Friday, April 13th at 8 pm at Pausa Art House the Saxophone Colossus performs with Jon Lehning – sax, Dave Schiavone – sax, Harry Fackelman – sax, Jared Tinkham – guitar, Anthony Henry – bass, and John Bacon – drums

There will be a special presentation on Saturday, April 14th at 8 pm at MusicalFare Theatre Premier Cabaret Lounge of Claude Bolling's iconic Suite For Flute and Jazz Piano.  In addition to Bolling's piece, there will be jazzed up arrangements of classical pieces and jazz standards. The event will feature Dave Schiavone, Peggy Scalzo, Theresa Quinn, and David Siegfried.  Tickets are $20 and available at MusicalFare Box Office.  

On Saturday, April 14th at 8 pm the Black Violin Duo comes to the Buffalo State Performing arts Center.  Combining a daunting array of jazz, hip-hop, funk, and classical styles and influences to produce a signature sound that is not quite maestro, not quite emcee, these two classically trained violinists and their DJ are redefining the music world one string at a time.  Here’s a clip that provides insight into this unique duo:

On Sunday, April 15th at 2 pm at the Theatre of Youth, the BJC will host a concert “I Got Rhythm: The Music of George Gershwin”

April Is Jazz Appreciation Month

Nietzsche’s JazzFest 2018

From Wednesday, April 11th to Sunday, April 15th there will be nearly 30 performances from local bands throughout the four days.  Ranging from 30 minutes to an hour for each performance.  Performances will begin at 5 p or 6 pm and run until midnight or 1 AM.  The highlight will be Friday, April 13th at 11:30 pm with a performance by MAZ featuring singer/songwriter Michael Maher and Friends.  Entrance will vary from $5 to $10. 

Trimania

The annual event at the Tri-Main Building takes place on Saturday, August 14th from 8 pm until 1 pm.  Entertainment will include a scattering of jazz throughout the building.  Tickets are $25 and all proceeds benefit the Buffalo Arts Studio.  More info here:  Trimania

Melissa Aldana at AKG Art of Jazz Series

One of the most talked about artists in jazz today is the Chilean tenor saxophonist, Melissa Aldana.  The Melissa Aldana Quartet will appear on Saturday, April 21st at 8:00 pm at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery Art of Jazz Series.  Aldana is the first female instrumentalist and first South American to win the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition.  Check out the video below – if this doesn’t get your attention, well I am not sure what to say!  She is one of the greats of our time.  It has been a fantastic series so don’t miss out on this final concert for this season!  Get tickets here: AOJ Series
