A JazzBuffalo Guide To Two Jazz Festivals And A Great Week Of Jazz!

For the second consecutive year, the Greater Buffalo Community will have the opportunity to enjoy jazz every day for a full week.  Thanks to the tremendous efforts of the Pappy Martin Legacy-Masten Jazz Festival and the CMC Jazz Festival, jazz fans will be treated to performances from local and international jazz artists.  The performances will take place in a variety of venues throughout the week of Sunday, July 22nd to Sunday, July 29th.

No worries!  JazzBuffalo has prepared a handy PDF guide to jazz festival week you can download.  It will list each day’s performances and the venues they are located at.  See below at the end of this article.

Given the number of performances slated throughout the week, it is impossible to provide details for each.  However, do visit the event listings and articles on JazzBuffalo to learn more.  Here are links for your reference:

The week ahead will offer outstanding jazz.  Here are my favorite picks of performances worth getting out to see:

Drea d’Nur at Pappy Martin Legacy-Masten Jazz Festival:  a truly dynamic vocalist noted for her Nina Simone tributes, as well as, outstanding performances filled with emotions.

Theo Croker at Pappy Martin Legacy-Masten Jazz Festival: an electrifying trumpeter pushing the boundaries of jazz with post-bop and groove style music.  A Rising Star in jazz.

Joel Ross and Good Vibes at CMC Jazz Festival: having seen Ross perform with trumpeter Marquis Hill, this young vibraphonist is on the verge of reaching the place we hold stellar vibraphonists, Stephon Harris and Steve Nelson.

Simona Primazzi at CMC Jazz Festival:  Primazzi, originally from Italy, is a truly gifted jazz pianist, composer, and arranger based in New York City.   She will participate in the “Let Me Be Free: Celebrating Cecil Taylor” event.

Toney Rhodes at CMC Jazz Festival:  we just do not get enough of Toney Rhodes and his electric groove jazz in Buffalo, as well as, his brilliant acoustic piano performances.

Kevin Hall at CMC Jazz Festival: a saxophonist on the rise with a refreshing jazz and R&B sound.

Francisico Mela Crash Trio at CMC Jazz Festival: superb Cuban-born drummer whose Crash Trio also performs with Melissa Aldana and Joe Lovano.  Great straight-ahead jazz.

Brian Freeman Quintet at Pappy Martin Legacy-Masten Jazz Festival:  one of the area’s superb jazz trumpeters leads his quintet.

Curtis Lundy with Warren Wolf, Donald Harrison, and Ralph Peterson at Pappy Martin Legacy-Masten Jazz Festival:  Curtis Lundy is one the premier jazz bassists on the scene and he brings one of the top vibraphonists in the world, Warren Wolf, along with sax gem Donald Harrison.

Carmen Lundy with Patrice Rushen and Jamison Ross at Pappy Martin Legacy-Masten Jazz Festival: Carmen Lundy, sister of Curtis Lundy, has been trailblazing the jazz scene with her jazz vocals beauty and stirring messages.  She brings with her jazz pianist Patrice Rushen and Rising Star drummer/vocalist Jamison Ross.

As you can see, both festivals offer up an outstanding week of jazz by local and international artists.  Be sure to check out the full lineup for both below in the guide.  There is jazz for everyone’s taste and likes!
