Jazz Luminaries, Legends, and Emerging Artists Headline Main Stage at Northwest Jazz Festival

Entering its 17th year, the 2018 Northwest Jazz Festival in Lewiston, NY will feature headlining performances from jazz luminaries, legends in jazz history, and several emerging jazz artists considered Rising Stars.  The festival’s Main Stage will present unique collaborations making history and never-before-presented ensembles seen or heard at the festival since it began.

Jazz luminaries and legends scheduled to perform at the festival are Christopher Bakriges, Avery Sharpe, Jay Hoggard, Benny Green, David Wong, Kenny Washington, Elio Villafranca, Vincent Herring, Steve Turre, Dion Parson, John Sarlo, Mike Milner, Kevin O’Neill, Rich Thompson, and Eric Johnson.  Emerging jazz artists recognized as “Rising Stars” by Downbeat Magazine, other jazz publications, and jazz critics include Veronica Swift, Nick Finzer, Glen Zaleski, Lucas Pino, Emmet Cohen, Russell Hall, Dave Barron, Peter Slavov, Jimmy McBride, and Evan Sherman.  The festival also welcomes Youngstown and Lewiston native, vocalist/pianist Sally Terrell, who currently performs in the Connecticut/New York City area.

The Main Stage of the festival will showcase significant collaborations and emerging jazz artists ensembles.  On Friday, August 24th, the festival kicks off with a collaboration between pianist Christopher Bakriges and long-time McCoy Tyner bassist Avery Sharpe and former Dizz Gillespie/Chico Freeman vibraphonist Jay Hoggard.   Later in the evening, the pairing of jazz legend pianist Benny Green and his trio featuring David Wong and drummer Kenny Washington with Rising Star vocalist Veronica Swift takes place.

On Saturday evening on the Main Stage, one of the most talked about Cuban-born jazz pianists in the jazz world today, Elio Villafranca, brings together a unique ensemble consisting of jazz legends Vincent Herring, Steve Turrré, and Dion Parson.  Villafranca rounds out the ensemble with emerging jazz artists Peter Slavov, Bruce Harris, and Gabo Logo.  This unique collaboration will bring the sounds of Carribean, Classical, and Cuban-influenced jazz via Duke Ellington-spirited epic original compositions and arrangements.
