International Jazz Vocalist Drea d’Nur Will Perform Tribute To Nina Simone At Hotel Henry Jazz Concert Series
In 1964, the prolific singer, songwriter, pianist, and civil rights activist, Nina Simone, appeared to a sold-out audience at Kleinhans Music Hall. It was a time of burgeoning civil unrest in our country’s history. Reaching a peak fifty years ago when our nation suffered through the assassinations of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy.
On Wednesday, October 10th, vocalist, pianists, and songwriter Drea d’Nur will perform a special tribute to Nina Simone entitled “Drea Sings Nina.” The concert will take place at the Hotel Henry and is part of the ongoing Hotel Henry Jazz Concert Series presented by JazzBuffalo. Drea d’Nur has performed such tributes to Nina Simone at Kleinhans Music Hall, Albright-Knox Art Gallery, and in Nina Simone’s home state of North Carolina.
Nina Simone used the power of her voice and music to advocate for social and civic change. Receiving backlash from the recording and music industry at the time for her focus on the struggles of the African-American community, the poor, and the Vietnam War. Her songs, Drea d’Nur notes, are still powerfully relevant in an age of social change and uncertainty.
“We are excited to make available to the community one of the most special tributes you will find in music today. Right here in Buffalo with one of the region’s most cherished vocalists and community leaders,” says Tony Zambito of JazzBuffalo.
d’Nur has received wide-acclaim from her concerts paying tribute to one of the most historic figures in American Music. She will perform with an ensemble that will include one of the area’s best pianists, arrangers, and songwriters, Toney Rhodes. Drea d’Nur hopes to create an experience that will reveal the beauty of Simone’s songs yet allows for the audience to take in the messages that were at the core of Simone’s songwriting.
Tickets for the performance are $15 and can be purchased online at the Hotel Henry Jazz Concert Series website: https://www.hotelhenry.com/jazz/
