Mike Jones Displays Mastery Of Jazz Piano In Virtual Quarantine Series

On Saturday, April 18, the jazz pianist extraordinaire was to make an appearance in his native hometown. At the MusicalFare Theatre Premier Cabaret Lounge presented by JazzBuffalo. That is, until our world was upended by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Living in Las Vegas as a part of the Penn & Teller show, Mike Jones has been busy recording masterful piano solos that puts his incredible talents on display in high quality video and audio.

Born and raised in Buffalo, Mike Jones left the area to study at the Berklee School of Music. Since 2002, his virtuoso jazz piano has been part of the Penn & Teller Show in Las Vegas. Playing before thousands of Las Vegas visitors each week.

In that time, Mike Jones has become well known for his mastery of the piano. And, for his “two-handed” mastery of the Great American Songbook. A throwback to the original stride players who exemplified equal prowess in both left ad right-hand playing of the piano.

During our time of staying at home, Jones has quietly been building up a repertoire of solo performances. Offering up a “Quarantine Series” of Great American Songbook piano playing to enjoy. Including one virtual duet.

As we celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month this April, here are several recorded performances from his home setting for all of us to enjoy:

Song: Close Your Eyes
Duet with vibraphonist Christian Tambur
Song: Day by Day
Song: Alone Together
Playing Duke Ellington
Song: Tangerine
Song: April in Paris
Song: There Will Never Be Another You
One for the Duke!

You can follow Mike Jones on Facebook or follow his YouTube channel for more recordings he may be putting up. JazzBuffalo will keep an eye out and perhaps post more.

We certainly hope, when this pandemic is finally over, to reschedule the homecoming solo performance concert we were all anticipating!
