Village Vanguard To Stage Comeback With First-Ever Live Streaming

On February 22, 2020, the Village Vanguard, the world’s oldest continuously operated jazz club, celebrated its 85th year in the basement at 178 7th Avenue South in New York City.

Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit New York City severely. Causing the venerable club to have to shut it doors on March 16th. Forcing the club to face a future of uncertainty.

One answer is to do something they have never thought they would in its 85-year history. Enter the world of live streaming. On Saturday, June 13th the Village Vanguard will present its first-ever live stream. Featuring the Billy Hart Quartet that consists of Billy Hart, Mark Turner, Ethan Iverson, and Ben Street.

The club will experiment with two 75-minute live streams weekly. Saturdays at 7 pm EDT and Sunday Matinees at 2 pm EDT. A portal will be set up on the club’s website to access the live stream for $7.

The initial live stream schedule is as follows:

• June 13th and 14th – Billy Hart Quartet featuring Mark Turner, Ethan Iverson and Ben Street

• June 20th & 21st – Vijay Iyer Trio featuring Nick Dunston and Jeremy Dutton

• June 27th & 28th – Joe Martin Quartet featuring Mark Turner, Kevin Hays and Nasheet Waits

• July 4th & 5th – Joe Lovano Trio Fascination featuring Ben Street and Andrew Cyrille
