On Sunday, July 26, 2020, a small celebration marking the 25th annual Pappy Martin Legacy – Masten Jazz Festival was held. The festival, founded by the late jazz musician “Pappy” Martin, had to cancel this year’s event due to the coronavirus pandemic.
(JazzBuffalo previously published an article on the event at this link: Pappy Martin Legacy Masten Jazz Festival To Celebrate 25th Year With Virtual Live Stream)
The organizers made a special attempt to both live stream and to record the performances that were held on that afternoon amidst sunny skies. They have now made the videos of the day available for all to view and JazzBuffalo is pleased to highlight them in this article.
There are four videos. One for each of the performing groups that made for quite a marvelous afternoon of jazz:
Part 1: Love Supreme School of Music Faculty Band
A fabulous ensemble that included Dalton Sharp – sax, Ahmad Pleasant – sax, Cal Parmer – bass, Preston Brown – drums, and an appearance by Sehrea N’dayu – vocals.
Part 2: George Caldwell Trio featuring Endea Owens
This grouping consisted of George Caldwell – piano, Sean Jefferson – drums, and special guest from Detroit on bass, Endea Owens.
Part 3 and Part 4: Curtis Lundy Quintet featuring Bobby Watson
The next two parts consist of a true headlining ensemble. Bassist Curtis Lundy organized an ensemble that included Anthony Wonsey on piano, Josh Evans on trumpet, Winard Harper on drums, and special guest Bobby Watson on alto sax.
While we all could not be together for another year of jazz at this long-running festival, the videos offer us music we can enjoy until next year.
Such efforts cannot happen without sponsors and the festival gives special thanks to the following sponsors:
