Art of Jazz I Marquis Hill “New Gospel Revisited”: Everything You Need To Know

Experience the Buffalo Debut of One of the Premier Trumpeters and Composers in Jazz Today

On Friday, April 14th at 8 pm, Marquis Hill will be making his long-awaited Buffalo debut at the Art of Jazz Series at Kleinhans Music Hall. The highly acclaimed jazz artist has been expanding the boundaries of jazz by collaborating with his peers on blending various genres into groundbreaking music. On this visit, Hill brings his much heralded New Gospel Revisited project to Kleinhans Music Hall – Mary Seton Room.

In a recent interview, Hill stated:

“We’ll be playing the music from my latest project ‘New Gospel revisited’… It is music that I composed 10 years ago and was the very first record I put out. It’s a very special set of music for me, and was my first time actually sitting down and telling myself I’m going to write seven songs. Now 10 years later, we’ve grown and the music has expanded…our audience can expect an incredible show.” – Marquis Hill

Critics have raved about Hill’s “New Gospel Revisited” as noted here:

“…distinguished both by the quality of the individual musicians, and their cohesion as a unit, but also by the standard of Hill’s writing and arranging. The arrangements sometimes suggest the partnership of trumpeter Miles Davis and tenor saxophonist Wayne Shorter, roughly circa Davis’ album Nefertiti (Columbia, 1968), something that may derive in part from the fact that one of Hill’s college tutors was Ron Carter, the bassist in Davis’ quintet from 1964 to 1968…” – All About Jazz

Marquis Hill will be joined by the extraordinary jazz musicians Mike King on piano, Kyle Miles on bass, and Corey Funville on drums. The list of artists each has performed and collaborated with includes Dee Dee Bridgewater, Kurt Elling, Marcus Printup, Marcus Strickland, Keyon Harold, Nicholas Payton, Joe Lovano, Marcus Miller, and many more.
