The Northwest Jazz Festival in Lewiston, NY, is thrilled to welcome the extraordinary Adrian Cunningham for its special celebration of the Great American Songbook on August 24th. The celebration will feature Cunningham’s exceptional talent in the “Get Out of Town” and “Accentuate the Positive” programs, presented by Jazz at the Ballroom.

Adrian Cunningham, a New York-based, Australian-born multi-instrumentalist, has garnered international acclaim for his mastery of the saxophone, clarinet, and flute. Described by DownBeat Magazine as epitomizing “sophistication and grace” with his tender clarinet work, Cunningham has made a significant impact on the international jazz community. The Wall Street Journal dubbed him “The Down Under Sax Star,” while The Independent, London, noted his saxophone solos as captivating enough to evoke “whimpering noises in the front stalls.”

Cunningham’s illustrious career spans two decades, during which he has performed with jazz luminaries such as Jon Batiste, Chris Potter, and Wynton Marsalis. His performances have graced renowned stages worldwide, including Carnegie Hall, Blue Note (New York and Tokyo), Stravinsky Auditorium at the Montreux Jazz Festival, and the Sydney Opera House.

An award-winning artist, Cunningham is the recipient of the Hot House Saxophone Award (NYC) and has led his band, Professor Cunningham and His Old School, to international acclaim. The band has won the World Jam band competition in Madrid and the Best Band award at the Harlem Festival in Vilnius, Lithuania.

Cunningham’s discography includes highly acclaimed recordings such as “Jazz Speak” with Jeff Hamilton, John Clayton, and Ted Rosenthal, and “Play Lerner and Loewe” with the Fred Hersch Trio and Randy Brecker. Both albums have secured top 20 spots on national jazz charts.

Beyond his solo endeavors, Cunningham is a regular member of trombonist Wycliffe Gordon’s quintet, with performances spanning prestigious festivals and venues globally, including the London Jazz Festival, Newport Jazz Festival, and Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola at Lincoln Center.

Since forming Professor Cunningham and His Old School in 2013, the traditional/New Orleans-style band has become a staple in international swing festivals. Their performances include notable festivals such as the Blue Note Jazz Festival (NYC), Melbourne International Jazz Festival (Australia), and Sopot Molo Jazz Festival (Poland).

From 2014-2017, Cunningham led the saxophone section of the Grammy-winning Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks, a NYC-based 1920s swing orchestra known for soundtracks on “Boardwalk Empire” and movies like “The Aviator.”
