The Northwest Bank Main Stage Celebration of the Great American Songbook is scheduled for Friday, August 23rd, and Saturday, August 24th.

Jazz fans are in for a treat as the Northwest Jazz Festival in Lewiston, NY, welcomes the extraordinary jazz trombonist Robert Edwards. As part of the festival’s Great American Songbook Celebration, presented by the festival and Jazz at the Ballroom, Edwards will captivate audiences throughout the evening as three distinct programs, Get Out of Town, Flying High, and Accentuate the Positive, are presented on Saturday, August 24th.

Born and raised in West Palm Beach, Florida, Robert Edwards’s journey into the world of jazz began at the Dreyfoos School of the Arts, where he was mentored by trombone giants Wycliffe Gordon and Bill Watrous. His passion for the trombone led him to the University of North Florida and later to New Jersey City University, where he studied under Pete McGuiness and Joe Magnarelli. Edwards further honed his craft at The Juilliard School, studying with Steve Turre and earning his master’s degree in 2010.

Robert’s illustrious career boasts numerous accolades, including winning the 2018 Detroit Jazz Festival’s Curtis Fuller Low Brass/Trombone Competition, which secured him a performance slot on the Main Stage. He has toured with the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Star Big Band and Roy Hargrove’s Big Band, and has graced the stage of the Village Vanguard with its renowned orchestra. Currently, he plays lead trombone in several prestigious ensembles, including the Steven Feifke Big Band, Eyal Vilner, Glenn Crytzer Orchestra, and the Danny Jonokuchi Big Band.

As a bandleader and composer, Robert Edwards has left an indelible mark on the international jazz stage. His 10-piece big band has performed at notable venues such as Birdland Jazz Club, the Django, and Swing 46. The Robert Edwards Quintet has been a regular feature at the legendary Smalls Jazz Club for the past five years. His discography includes five records as a leader and co-leader, with notable works such as “Play Date” (2019), “Home Life” (2021), and “It Had To Be You” (2022), created in collaboration with vocalist Vanessa Perea. His solo records “Sound Business” (2010) and “Upswing” (2023) showcase his versatility and prowess as a leading figure in jazz.

Since 2019, Robert has also shared his expertise as a professor of jazz trombone at New Jersey City University and Queens College, nurturing the next generation of jazz musicians.
