Recently, jazz via the Great American Songbook has experienced a significant revival, enchanting us again with its melodic rhythms and unforgettable tunes.

This revival is no accident; it’s fueled by a perfect storm of factors rejuvenating the Great American Songbook. Standout talents like Samara Joy and Champian Fulton have emerged, captivating new audiences, while superstars such as Lady Gaga, Paul McCartney, Laufey, and Billie Eilish have breathed new life into classic jazz standards.

However, the resurgence of jazz and the Great American Songbook isn’t solely due to individual artists. The tireless efforts of passionate musicians and dedicated organizations keep the spirit of jazz alive. Jazz at the Ballroom is a prime example of such dedication. This non-profit organization is one of the few in the nation committed to providing a platform for seasoned jazz artists and emerging talent, ensuring the Great American Songbook remains an integral part of our cultural heritage. Jazz at the Ballroom doesn’t just host concerts across the country; it also brings music to community centers, nursing homes, schools, and other cultural hubs, creating an inclusive jazz experience.

Starting from the original Bing Crosby Estate in Hillsborough, California, Jazz at the Ballroom continues to push boundaries, creating innovative shows and showcasing new talent to deliver the cherished standards of the Great American Songbook. This revival is not just about the artists but about the audience and fans too – from the Greatest Generation to Gen Z, everyone has a special connection to these timeless songs.

At this year’s Northwest Jazz Festival, we welcome Jazz at the Ballroom to the Northwest Jazz Festival in Lewiston, NY. The festival, set for August 24th, will feature three captivating Jazz at the Ballroom programs: “Get Out of Town,” “Flying High,” and “Accentuate the Positive.” This novel programming, especially by festival standards, promises to bring to life some of the most iconic songs by the greatest jazz vocalists in American history.

The series of programs is headed by the Artistic Director of JATB and immensely talented pianist Konrad Paszkudzki, and features rising star pianist/vocalist Champian Fulton. Fulton will be accompanied by the exceptional vocalists Vanessa Perea and Olivia Chindamo. Audiences will be treated to classics like “Tea for Two,” “All of Me,” “What a Difference a Day Makes,” and many more, in a celebration that will resonate with jazz lovers of all ages.

In addition, the programs will feature the acclaimed trombonist Rob Edwards and superstar saxophonist/clarinetist Adrian Cunningham, the modern King of Swing. They will also include an appearance by Wyatt Michael from “The Voice,” who has been leading the revival of the crooner style of jazz vocals.

In 2022, JazzBuffalo proudly presented the extraordinary Samara Joy in Buffalo, who earlier in her journey performed with JATB, marking a significant moment in playing a role in the Great American Songbook revival. This year’s festival continues that tradition, offering an unparalleled jazz experience on the Main Stage of the jazz festival.
