Recognized for her swinging style and charismatic performances, Champian will lead the “Flying High” presentation at 6 pm, a tribute to some of the greatest female jazz vocalists.

Born in Oklahoma, Champian Fulton has been described as “the most gifted pure jazz singer of her generation” by Mark Stryker of the Detroit Free Press, “a charming young steward of the mainstream jazz tradition” by Nate Chinen of The New York Times, and “a balm for the soul” by All About Jazz. She began her musical journey at a young age, inspired by her jazz trumpeter father, Stephen Fulton, and the presence of his musician friends, including Clark Terry and Major Holley.

Her illustrious career has taken her from New York’s finest jazz rooms to concert halls around the world, where she has performed with musical royalty such as Lou Donaldson, Frank Wess, Scott Hamilton, Buster Williams, and Louis Hayes. Champian’s dedication to recording her music is evident with seventeen albums to her name, including the critically acclaimed “After Dark” and “Birdsong.”

At the Northwest Jazz Festival, Champian will be joined by the talented Olivia Chindamo and Vanessa Perea for a one-of-a-kind presentation celebrating legendary female jazz vocalists like Billie Holiday, Anita O’Day, Lena Horne, Peggy Lee, Jo Stafford, Rosemary Clooney, and Ella Fitzgerald. This tribute will highlight the remarkable journeys of these women who began as “canaries” with big bands before soaring to solo careers.
