A Broadway Triumph: Community and Pure Magic on Stage
In an electrifying production that bridged the magic of Broadway with the vibrant spirit of Buffalo’s local talent, Starring Buffalo’s production of CATS took center stage, leaving its audience spellbound. The performance was enriched by Broadway visitors Alyssa Fox and Major Attaway, alongside a memorable appearance by the exceptionally multi-talented Ashlyn Fenn. Backed by an outstanding who’s who of regional talent and dancers, the production showcased the very best of what community-driven theater matched with Broadway stars can achieve.
From the very first act, the ensemble’s energy was palpable. In Act II, the production reached its emotional peak as the entire cast delivered a forceful and moving portrayal around the centerpiece song Memory, and T.S. Eliot’s “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats” book of poems, which the production is based on.
The production’s most famous song, Memory, was performed by Alyssa Fox magnificently. Fox’s most extensive performance of Memory came in Act II and encapsulated the raw passion of the show. Standout performances included the captivating scenes of Skimbleshanks: The Railway Cat, Macavity: The Mystery Cat, and Magical Mistoffelees, each contributing to an unforgettable theatrical experience. Adding another layer to the magic, the pit orchestra—featuring some of Buffalo’s best in jazz—was outstanding, elevating every note and rhythm throughout the performance.
Beyond the artistic brilliance, this production highlights how Starring Buffalo is transforming the Buffalo theater landscape. By uplifting accessibility to Broadway-quality productions and inviting regional actors and community choruses to participate, Starring Buffalo is setting a new standard in staged readings and live performances. This initiative is quickly becoming a treasured pillar of Buffalo’s arts and culture, demonstrating that exceptional theater is not just for the few—it’s a gift for the entire community.
And, we thank all the passionate people associated with Starring Buffalo for this precious gift.
