Internationally Acclaimed Pianist Tadataka Unno Joins the Jeff Hamilton Trio
Internationally acclaimed jazz pianist Tadataka Unno is set to dazzle audiences at the upcoming Art of Jazz Series concert with the Jeff Hamilton Trio on Sunday, April 13th at 3 pm. Born in Tokyo in 1980, Unno began playing the piano at age four and discovered his passion for jazz by the time he was nine. After honing his skills at the Tokyo University of the Arts and establishing a vibrant career in Japan, he moved to New York in 2008, where his expressive style and technical mastery quickly earned him the admiration of jazz legends like Hank Jones, Frank Wess, and Jimmy Cobb. Notably, he became the first and only regular Japanese member of both the Jimmy Cobb Trio and the Roy Hargrove Quintet.
Unno’s career is a testament to resilience and the transformative power of music. Over the years, he has shared the stage with a dazzling roster of jazz greats, including John Pizzarelli, Jimmy Heath, Sadao Watanabe, Houston Person, Clifton Anderson, Jazzmeia Horn, Winard Harper, and Russel Malone. His journey has been celebrated in high-profile media, with his inspiring story featured in the 2021 NHK Special, “This Wonderful World.”
In March 2022, Unno released Get My Mojo Back on Verve Records—a comeback album that received widespread acclaim and became one of Japan’s best-selling jazz albums of the year. His triumphant return after overcoming a traumatic hate crime in 2020 has only deepened his musical voice. In 2023, Unno followed up this album with I Am, Because You Are, which received widespread acclaim. At the start of 2025, internationally renowned drummer Jeff Hamilton personally invited him to join his trio, further cementing his status as one of the preeminent jazz pianists of his generation.
Now, joining forces with drummer Jeff Hamilton and his esteemed trio, Unno brings a unique blend of Japanese sensibility and New York edge to the stage. This concert promises an intimate yet electrifying exploration of jazz standards and original compositions, showcasing Unno’s ability to weave intricate melodies with heartfelt improvisation.
