Inspiring New Generations Through the Spirit of JAM 2025
April is here, and with it comes Jazz Appreciation Month—or as we like to call it, JAM—a time to recognize and celebrate the extraordinary heritage and history of jazz. Originating at the museum in 2001 through the vision of John Edward Hasse, curator of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, JAM builds on the legacy of Jazz Awareness Month created by the Louisiana Jazz Federation in New Orleans in 1980. This month-long celebration is designed to inspire people of all ages to engage with jazz in every form—from attending live concerts and listening to recordings to reading about the music’s rich past. At JazzBuffalo, we proudly embrace this tradition as a community.
This year, the annual Jazz Appreciation Month poster pays homage to one of the most influential figures in jazz history: Lester Young. The poster features a stunning portrait of the legendary saxophonist, nicknamed “Pres” for his cool, relaxed style, drawn from LeRoy Neiman’s brilliantly colored 2005 Big Band painting. Young’s innovative playing, unique fashion, and his smooth, laid-back “cool school” approach set him apart from his contemporaries and continue to inspire new generations of musicians.

Lester Young’s story is one of enduring influence. Raised in a musical family, he toured across the United States from a young age, ultimately rising to prominence with the Count Basie Orchestra in Kansas City before making his mark in New York City. His relaxed, free-floating style and collaborations with icons like Billie Holiday defined an era, and his legacy lives on in the music we cherish today. This poster is not only a tribute to his profound impact on jazz but also a visual reminder of why this art form remains a vital part of our cultural fabric.
As we celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month, I invite you to join us in exploring, learning, and immersing yourself in the rich traditions of jazz. Whether you’re a longtime aficionado or new to the music, there’s never been a better time to dive into the world of jazz. Let’s honor our past and inspire our future together—because jazz is not just music; it’s a living, breathing celebration of art and community.
