Emmet Cohen: From Prodigy to Piano Master

Emmet Cohen, born May 25, 1990, in Miami, Florida, began piano lessons at age three through the Suzuki Method, laying the foundation for his remarkable technique and musicality. Raised in Montclair, New Jersey, he performed with the Gibson/Baldwin Grammy Jazz Ensemble in high school, connecting early with future collaborators like Benny Benack III and Grace Kelly. Cohen earned his Bachelor of Music from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami in 2012 and his Master of Music from Manhattan School of Music in 2014. A recipient of the 2019 American Pianists Awards Cole Porter Fellowship, Cohen has released multiple acclaimed albums on Mack Avenue Records—most recently Vibe Provider—and led his Masters Legacy Series honoring jazz legends like Jimmy Cobb and Ron Carter. Established in 2020 during the pandemic, Live From Emmet’s Place became a groundbreaking streaming platform for jazz.
Philip Norris: Juilliard Bassist

Originally from Winnipeg, Manitoba, Philip Norris discovered bass at age 13 after studying piano and French horn in Raleigh, North Carolina. A Juilliard School graduate with Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Jazz Studies, Norris has performed alongside Emmet Cohen on recordings like Vibe Provider and live streams of Live From Emmet’s Place. He has also shared stages with Joshua Redman and Veronica Swift and is a sought-after collaborator by many international jazz artists.

He studied under masters Harold Mabern and Art Taylor at William Paterson College, and subsequently joined luminaries like Junior Cook and Diana Krall while co-founding the quintet One for All. Farnsworth has recorded over 100 albums as a leader and sideman and remains in high demand on international jazz stages
