An Exciting Downtown Jazz Revival: A Conversation on WBEN Radio with Thomas Puckett

Tony Zambito and Rocco Termini share plans to bring jazz to the streets of downtown Buffalo

It was a privilege to join Thomas Puckett on WBEN Radio to talk about the significant pivot for JazzBuffalo and the beloved Jazz at Richardson series. With the abrupt cancellation of our summer events at the Richardson-Olmsted Campus following the hotel’s transition, we were faced with the tough task of responding quickly for the sake of everyone of you – our community.

During the interview with Tom, I had the opportunity to briefly share how deeply disappointing the news was—not only for JazzBuffalo, but for the hundreds of community members who made JazzBuffalo’s Jazz at Richardson a summer tradition. And more importantly, how excited I am for our future and how we are taking a community-first driven step to create a unique alternative. An alternative that contributes to the revitalization and redevelopment of downtown Buffalo.

Fortunately, our longtime friend and partner Rocco Termini stepped forward almost immediately. As did several others and we a very appreciative of the out pouring of concern and offers. As many know, Rocco and I have worked together for over a decade on initiatives like JazzMondays at Tappo Rooftop. His support has always aligned with JazzBuffalo’s mission: to use the power of music to bring people together and breathe life into downtown Buffalo.

On air, Rocco shared his vision for the potential of the closed-off street festival concept and growing the Buffalo Jazz Festival. Essentially, take our unique JazzBuffalo spirit and bring it right to Ellicott Street, creating a jazz street festival with the energy and vibe found in cities like New Orleans, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Chicago.

And that’s exactly what we’re doing.

Brass Machine

We’re excited about two of the Jazz at Richardson dates being reimagined as downtown street festival events. On Sunday, August 10th from 4–7 pm, we’ll transform Ellicott Street into a mini–Bourbon Street with The Brass Machine bringing their New Orleans-inspired second-line sound. Then on Sunday, August 31st, we’ll host the 4th Annual Buffalo Jazz Festival, from 12:30 pm to 7:30 pm, featuring a new lineup and even a dance floor on the street!

These events are about more than jazz—they’re about community, creativity, and revitalizing our city’s heart. Jazz for everyone!

Listen to the full WBEN interviews below with myself and Rocco Termini as we dive deeper into our shared mission and the exciting plans ahead.

We’re grateful to WBEN and Thomas Puckett for shining a light on this important story and for giving us the opportunity to let the community know: jazz is alive and well—and moving forward in downtown Buffalo.
