Honoring a Storied Past and Igniting a Vibrant Future for Jazz in Buffalo
Buffalo’s jazz story runs deep. Throughout decades, Kleinhans Music Hall has hosted some of the greatest names in jazz—Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Count Basie, Jimmy Smith, Duke Ellington, Dave Brubeck, and many more—through legendary concerts produced by the late radio personality and festival producer Joe Rico. In recent years, we’ve also welcomed today’s top jazz artists and exciting rising stars in concerts produced by Bruce Eaton and me through JazzBuffalo. These unforgettable concerts have woven jazz into the cultural fabric of our city, making Kleinhans a true beacon for world-class jazz music.

Now, with the launch of Jazz at Kleinhans, we have the opportunity to honor that heritage and take a bold step forward. This is more than a concert series—it’s the creation of a true center for jazz in Buffalo, elevating the music and the Great American Songbook to the level they deserve. By presenting internationally acclaimed artists in the iconic Main Hall, the intimate Mary Seaton Room, and the welcoming Blue Room, we’re establishing a home for the music that helped shape our city’s cultural identity.
The inaugural season speaks volumes about both our ambition and our roots. A Swingin’ Christmas with Louis Prima Jr. & the Witnesses brings joyous, brassy energy reminiscent of Buffalo’s legendary big-band nights. Celebrating Harold Arlen’s 121st Birthday with Tierney Sutton and Tamir Hendelman pays tribute to one of our own—a Buffalo native whose songs helped define the Great American Songbook. The John Pizzarelli Trio carries forward the art of American Songbook storytelling and swing. At the same time, Emmet Cohen Presents Miles & Coltrane at 100 reminds us that jazz is ever-evolving, reaching toward the future while honoring two of its greatest legends.

Kleinhans Music Hall has always been a place where music reaches its highest level. Through Jazz at Kleinhans, we embrace the belief that Buffalo deserves a permanent, visible home for jazz and a fitting tribute to the Great American Songbook. Here, the legendary concerts of the 1940s through the 1970s continue to inspire new generations. That legacy lives on today with recent performances by acclaimed artists such as Christian Sands, Veronica Swift, Catherine Russell, Miguel Zenón, Caity Gyorgy, Anaïs Reno, Pete Malinverni, Elio Villafranca, Amina Figarova, Marquis Hill, and more. It’s both a celebration of our history and a spark for downtown renewal, inviting audiences to gather, listen, and experience the joy that only jazz and the timeless songs of the Great American Songbook can bring.

Kleinhans Music Hall’s jazz story is prolific. From the 1940s through the 1990s, its stage welcomed a parade of giants whose names define the art form of jazz, such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Billie Holiday, Stan Kenton, Buddy Rich, Dave Brubeck, Joe Williams, Eroll Garner, Benny Goodman, Ahmad Jamal, Carmen McRae, Cannonball Adderley, Nancy Wilson, Louis Armstrong, Jimmy Smith, George Benson, Mark Murphy, Herbie Hancock, and Tony Bennett, among others. These momentous concerts helped establish Buffalo as a true destination for jazz and the Great American Songbook, setting the foundation for today’s renewed commitment to making Kleinhans a vibrant home for jazz once again.

As someone passionate about making jazz and honoring the Great American Songbook accessible to our community through JazzBuffalo and ArtsBuffalo, I believe this is a milestone for our city. Jazz at Kleinhans is where the past, present, and future of Buffalo’s jazz and American Songbook traditions meet. It’s the jazz center Buffalo deserves—and together, we will make it thrive.
