Linus and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds

A Unique Night of Beatles Meets Guaraldi at Art Meets Jazz

This fall’s Art Meets Jazz takes a beautifully unexpected turn with an evening titled Linus and Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, featuring two of Buffalo’s stellar next-generation jazz artists—Nate Kalnitz on bass and Ian Liedke on keyboards. The mission, conceived by Nate Klanitz, is to interpret classic Beatles songs through the musical lens of Vince Guaraldi, whose delicate, lyrical jazz arrangements brought fresh life to beloved melodies.

Many jazz fans know Guaraldi best for his music in the Peanuts franchise—especially the timeless “Linus and Lucy”—but fewer realize he also ventured into jazz interpretations of Beatles tunes. Among the songs he tackled are “I’m a Loser”, “Yesterday”, and a haunting version of “Eleanor Rigby”. His version of “I’m a Loser” blends melancholic lyricism with a Latin-jazz feel. His interpretation of “Eleanor Rigby” is mournful yet lush, giving fresh emotional depth to McCartney’s masterpiece. Guaraldi’s versions show how the Great American Songbook tradition and jazz improvisation can illuminate pop melodies in new, unexpected ways.

So on Wednesday, October 22, at 6 pm in the historic Brisbane Building (Hunt Art Gallery / Beebe’s at the Gallery), Nate and Ian will channel that spirit—carrying Guaraldi’s legacy forward while exploring Yesterday, Eleanor Rigby, I’m a Loser, and perhaps a few others in the same vein. It not only honors Guaraldi’s boundary-crossing work but also demonstrates the evolving nature of the American Songbook itself.

This is one of the most imaginative events we’ve ever presented at Art Meets Jazz—intimate, inventive, and rooted in jazz history while reaching into fresh territory. It’s a night for anyone who loves melody, harmony, and the playful intersection of jazz and popular song.
