Investing in the arts is investing in the community
Since the pandemic, Buffalo’s downtown revitalization has hit the proverbial brick wall. With an estimated 20–25% of downtown workers now working remotely, fewer people are frequenting restaurants, shops, and cultural venues that once defined the city’s heart. It’s time to rethink what truly drives renewal — and this is where the arts and ArtsBuffalo come in.
Cities that prioritize the arts are the ones that thrive. They’re the places where neighborhoods are vibrant and walkable, where public spaces pulse with creativity, and where people feel a genuine sense of belonging. These cities don’t treat the arts as a luxury — they treat them as essential infrastructure, as vital to civic and economic well-being as roads, housing, or schools.
Across the country, we’ve seen how investment in the arts drives meaningful impact. According to a study by the American for the Arts, in 2022 alone, nonprofit arts and cultural organizations generated $151.7 billion in economic activity, supported 2.6 million jobs, and produced $29 billion in tax revenue. Beyond performance and exhibition, the arts support educators, designers, small business owners, and neighborhood entrepreneurs — all of whom help power local economies and strengthen civic identity.

Here in Buffalo, we already have a strong foundation. The Theater District — anchored by Shea’s Performing Arts Center, Shea’s 710 Theatre, and other historic venues along Main Street — remains one of the city’s greatest cultural assets. These institutions have played a major role in keeping the arts alive downtown and continue to draw audiences from across the region.
But for Buffalo to fully realize its potential as a thriving, creative city, we need to build upon that foundation. We must embed arts and culture more deeply into the ongoing revitalization of downtown — expanding beyond performance spaces and into every corner of civic life.
That’s the vision behind ArtsBuffalo, a new initiative designed to strengthen and connect the city’s creative community. ArtsBuffalo is being developed to foster collaboration among artists, organizations, businesses, and civic leaders, helping to ensure that arts and culture are recognized not as afterthoughts but as key drivers of Buffalo’s resurgence.
The evidence is clear. The same American for the Arts study found that for every $1 invested in the arts, the economy can see up to $5 in return through job creation, tourism, and local spending. Cities like Philadelphia, Detroit, and Miami have proven that cultural investment isn’t just reflective of transformation — it catalyzes it. When the arts are prioritized, they stimulate development, increase property values, enhance public safety, and strengthen social bonds.
Buffalo’s challenge — and opportunity — lies in expanding our cultural infrastructure. That means supporting local artists, musicians, and cultural entrepreneurs who serve as anchors in our downtown and surrounding neighborhoods. It means reimagining vacant buildings as creative spaces, making downtown more walkable and lively with public art, and integrating artistic thinking into broader urban planning — from housing and transportation to tourism and economic development.

If we want people to live, work, and spend time downtown, we must give them reasons to connect and come together as a community. The arts provide those reasons. They inspire curiosity, empathy, and civic pride. They bring people together to celebrate, reflect, and imagine the kind of city we can become.
Buffalo is on the cusp of a new chapter. With the continued strength of institutions like Shea’s and the development of ArtsBuffalo, we can make the arts central to how we rebuild and reimagine downtown. By treating arts and culture as the framework — not the fringe — of civic renewal, we’ll be investing in something far greater than entertainment. We’ll be investing in belonging, creativity, and the enduring spirit of our city.
Arts and culture aren’t a frill. They’re the foundation for a vibrant, resilient Buffalo.
