Celebrating 10 Years of the Matt’s Music Vocal Performance Team

Ten Years of Voice, Confidence, and Community

For the past decade, one of the most inspiring threads woven into Western New York’s musical fabric has been the Matt’s Music Vocal Performance Team. As someone who has had the privilege of leading JazzBuffalo and serving as Artistic Director of the Northwest Jazz Festival in Lewiston, I’ve had a front-row seat to the profound impact this program has had—not just on young performers, but on our broader music community.

Founded in 2015 by vocal director Zach Carr, the Vocal Performance Team was created with an ambitious but deeply human goal: to train singers who could do it all, while helping them grow into confident, expressive individuals. Over the past ten years, that vision has come to life in extraordinary ways. What began as a focused performance ensemble has evolved into one of Western New York’s most respected and meaningful vocal programs—developing artists who are as grounded as they are gifted.

Matt’s Music itself carries a legacy that spans more than six decades, growing from a small accordion studio into Western New York’s largest vocal program. Today, under the leadership of Kathy Carr, the family tradition continues with a rare blend of musical excellence, mentorship, and community care. Kathy, who has been part of the Matt’s Music story since birth, carries forward the values instilled by her parents—ensuring that music education remains accessible, welcoming, and deeply connected to the community it serves.

That philosophy is reflected not only in the Vocal Performance Team but in Matt’s Music’s broader commitment to service. Through its charitable foundation and food pantry, the organization removes barriers and opens doors—making sure that music, opportunity, and belonging are available to all, regardless of circumstance.

Over the past ten years, the Vocal Performance Team has transformed countless shy beginners into confident performers. Students have gone on to participate in theater productions, national competitions, workshops with respected professionals, and performances across Western New York and beyond. Just as importantly, many speak to the personal growth the program fosters—discovering their own voices, artistic identities, and self-belief along the way.

A Team Member Performance!

As Zach Carr has often shared, the goal was never just technical excellence. It was about helping students leave the room feeling better about who they are as people. That ethos is evident every time these young performers step on stage—with presence, joy, and authenticity.

From a JazzBuffalo perspective, the impact of Matt’s Music Vocal Performance Team extends far beyond its own walls. The confidence, musicianship, and professionalism these singers develop ripple outward—enriching local productions, festivals, and performance spaces across the region. The team’s regular presence at the Northwest Jazz Festival in Lewiston has become a cherished tradition, embodying the intergenerational spirit and community-centered approach that jazz—and all great music—thrives on.

Ten years in, this milestone is not simply a celebration of longevity. It is a recognition of values sustained: education with heart, performance with purpose, and community as the foundation of it all. As the third generation of the Carr family continues to build on this legacy, the future feels as strong and hopeful as the voices rising from its rehearsal rooms.

In a cultural landscape that often shifts quickly, the Matt’s Music Vocal Performance Team stands as a reminder of what lasting impact looks like—one voice, one student, one moment of confidence at a time.

You can share in this celebration when it comes to the stage on Saturday, January 3rd at 7:00 pm, when Matt’s Music Vocal Performance Team marks its 10th Anniversary Concert at the historic Palace Theater in Lockport. It promises to be a special evening honoring a decade of song, growth, and shared joy—and a fitting tribute to a program that continues to inspire Western New York.

For anyone who believes in the power of music to shape people and communities, this is a celebration worth attending.
