JazzBuffalo and ArtsBuffalo Help Reimagine An Exciting Summer in Downtown Buffalo

From jazz festivals and outdoor concerts to game nights, street activations, and cultural gatherings, a growing coalition is helping shape downtown Buffalo into a vibrant summer destination.

What began last summer as an experiment in activating downtown Buffalo through music, arts, culture, and community gathering has now evolved into something far more ambitious.

Following the tremendous response to the Buffalo Jazz Festival Prelude event on Ellicott Street and the 4th Annual Buffalo Jazz Festival, JazzBuffalo and the newly formed ArtsBuffalo initiative are proud to be part of a growing coalition of organizations, businesses, venues, and community leaders committed to helping ignite downtown Buffalo once again.

At the center of these efforts is the new Electric District Alliance—a collaborative initiative focused on transforming the Ellicott Street and Mohawk Street corridor into a vibrant destination for arts, culture, entertainment, dining, and community experiences year-round.

ArtsBuffalo is honored to serve as both a participant and the supporting organizational non-profit entity member of the Electric District Alliance initiative alongside a growing number of businesses and partners that include Big Ditch Brewing Company, Tappo Restaurant, Streetlight Brasserie, Savoy, House of Charm, Mohawk Place, and others who share a collective vision for bringing sustained life and energy back to downtown Buffalo.

Developer, downtown advocate, and key JazzBuffalo/ArtsBuffalo partner Rocco Termini described the broader mission best in a recent interview with Buffalo Rising:

“Activating the street is not just promotional, it’s an economic development tool. We have a cluster of businesses here that have the ability to do great things. We all need to work together.”

That spirit of collaboration is exactly what is beginning to take shape.

For JazzBuffalo, these efforts align directly with its long-standing mission to use jazz and the arts as a vehicle for community building, accessibility, and cultural engagement. What once may have been viewed simply as concerts or festivals is increasingly becoming part of a broader civic initiative focused on creating memorable experiences that encourage people to gather downtown once again. This growing momentum can already be seen through initiatives such as Art Meets Jazz, The Jazz Lounge, and Jazz at Kleinhans.

This summer, residents and visitors alike will begin seeing the results of these collective efforts materialize throughout the Electric District.

Plans currently underway include Friday night concert series, Summer Game Nights, outdoor viewing experiences utilizing a massive LED screen, pickleball and bocce leagues, Chalkfest activities for families, street festivals, cultural gatherings, sports watch parties, outdoor dining activations, and much more. Numerous additional initiatives remain in development and will be announced throughout the coming months as details become finalized.

A key part of the vision is creating a wide range of recurring activities that help establish downtown Buffalo as an ongoing destination—not simply for isolated events, but for continuous experiences centered around arts, culture, food, music, and community interaction.

For JazzBuffalo specifically, we are especially excited about two major summer initiatives.

JazzBuffalo’s Summer of Jazz

The first is the return of the Summer of Jazz Series on Ellicott Street—four special Sundays throughout July and August that will once again transform Ellicott Street into an outdoor jazz café experience following the overwhelming positive response received last year. This year’s series will feature JazzBuffalo Poll-winning artists and ensembles, including The Anderson Big Band, Hot Club of Buffalo, Wendell Rivera Latin Jazz Ensemble, and The Fredtown Stompers.

JazzBuffalo will also enter its 11th season of JazzMondays on the Tappo Restaurant Rooftop Patio featuring My Cousin Toné. What began over a decade ago as a simple weekly jazz gathering has evolved into one of downtown Buffalo’s enduring summer traditions—a weekly celebration of the Great American Songbook that continues bringing audiences together throughout the summer months for evenings of music, friendship, and community under the Buffalo skyline.

Additionally, JazzBuffalo is proud to present the 5th Annual Buffalo Jazz Festival during Labor Day Weekend—an event that continues evolving into one of the city’s signature cultural celebrations. This year’s festival will feature internationally acclaimed artists, Grammy Award-winning performer Karrin Allyson featured with the Brazilian jazz group Três Mais, regional talent, and community engagement throughout downtown Buffalo.

“These efforts are about more than presenting concerts,” said Tony Zambito. “They are about helping create positive momentum for Buffalo through music, arts, culture, and shared experiences. We believe downtown Buffalo can once again become a vibrant gathering place where people want to spend time, discover artists, support businesses, and experience community together.”

None of these efforts would be possible without the generous support and participation of businesses, sponsors, venues, artists, organizations, volunteers, and community partners who continue investing in the future of downtown Buffalo.

Support for this growing downtown summer destination initiative is made possible through the generous monetary sponsorship and in-kind support of ArtsBuffalo, Tappo Restaurant, Signature Development, Absolut Vodka, Try-It Distributing, Big Ditch Brewing Company, Visit Buffalo Niagara, the City of Buffalo, Iroquois Bar, Buffalo Rising, Buffalo Civic Auto Ramps, Jim Beam Liquors, Erie County Legislators Lawrence Dupre and Michael Kooshoian, Five Star Bank, and numerous additional partners, sponsors, and donors who share a commitment to helping make downtown Buffalo a vibrant destination and gathering place through the power of music, arts, culture, and community.

As summer approaches, one thing is increasingly clear: there is tremendous momentum building throughout the Electric District and downtown Buffalo.

And this may only be the beginning.
