A Beautiful Sunday Afternoon Together in Downtown Buffalo

Havana Nights brought music and a festive spirit to Ellicott Street

Sometimes the best measure of an event isn’t simply what happens on the stage.

It’s what happens all around it.

Sunday’s Havana Nights brought a festive atmosphere to Ellicott Street as the Wendell Rivera Latin Jazz Ensemble filled the afternoon with the rhythms and energy of Latin jazz.

But what made the afternoon especially memorable was the vibe around the music.

People gathered with friends. Families spent time together. Some danced. Others relaxed in their chairs, enjoyed something to eat or drink, talked with the people around them, and simply took in a beautiful summer afternoon in downtown Buffalo.

There were smiles everywhere.

For a few hours, Ellicott Street became more than the location of an event. It became a place to spend time together.

That’s one of the things ArtsBuffalo, JazzBuffalo, and Tappo Restaurant hoped Summer of Jazz would mean.

Not simply a series of performances, but summer afternoons when people can come downtown, hear great music, see familiar faces, meet new ones, and enjoy being part of something happening in the heart of the city.

Sunday felt like exactly that.

The music created the energy.

The beautiful weather certainly helped.

But it was the people who created the atmosphere.

And looking across Ellicott Street on Sunday afternoon, you could see something simple but meaningful:

People enjoying music, enjoying Buffalo, and enjoying being together.

Below, enjoy the photographs of Jack Zuff, who beautifully captured the spirit of the afternoon—the people, the smiles, the movement, and the simple joy of spending a summer Sunday together in downtown Buffalo.
