Why Gabrielle Stravelli Is a Jazz Singer You Need to Experience

Every so often, someone asks me what makes a great jazz singer.

It’s a fair question. After all, many wonderful vocalists perform jazz standards. But not every vocalist is truly a jazz singer.

For me, Gabrielle Stravelli is one of those rare artists who reminds us of the difference.

Jazz isn’t simply the songs you choose. It’s how you approach them. It’s the way a singer lives inside the rhythm, shapes a lyric in the moment, and listens as carefully as they sing.

Above all, it’s swing. Gabrielle swings. Not because she’s trying to. Because it’s simply part of who she is as a musician.

You hear it from the very first phrase. There’s an ease to her time, a natural conversation with the musicians around her, and a confidence that allows every lyric to breathe without ever losing the pulse that makes jazz feel alive.

That’s remarkably difficult to teach. The finest jazz singers simply have it. Gabrielle does.

One of the things I’ve admired throughout her career is that she understands jazz isn’t about showing us how well you can sing. It’s about making the music come alive in the moment.

That’s why every performance feels fresh. She’s listening, responding, and creating. No two songs ever unfold exactly the same way.

That spirit has taken her to Birdland, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops, international festivals, and concert halls around the world.

Yet none of those accomplishments really tell her story. Her musicianship does.

I was reminded of that again while listening to her beautiful recording, Beautiful Moons Ago. It’s an album that reflects everything I admire about Gabrielle: wonderful songs, elegant swing, thoughtful arrangements, and an artist completely comfortable trusting the music instead of trying to impress the listener.

There’s another reason I think Gabrielle is such a wonderful fit for the Lewiston Jazz Festival.

She reminds us that jazz is a conversation, not a performance to be watched from a distance. It’s a bond between artist, musicians, and audience.

When Gabrielle sings, you don’t simply hear a beautiful voice.

You hear a musician.

That’s an important distinction, and it’s why I believe every jazz lover should experience her at least once.

On Saturday, August 29, at 6:15 pm on the Main Stage, Gabrielle Stravelli brings that artistry to the Lewiston Jazz Festival.

Once you hear her, I think you’ll quickly understand why musicians and audiences alike hold her in such high regard.

You’ll hear remarkable songs. You’ll hear effortless swing. And you’ll experience one of today’s finest jazz singers doing what she does best.

Making jazz feel completely alive.
