About Dr. Lonnie Smith

Renowned jazz musician Smith, honored as a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master in 2017, passed away on September 28, 2021 at his Fort Lauderdale, FL residence. He was 79 years old and succumbed to pulmonary fibrosis. Smith was born on July 3, 1942, in Lackawanna, NY, just south of Buffalo. He credited his musical upbringing to his mother, a gospel singer who introduced him to jazz and classical music. During his teenage years, Smith developed a passion for playing the Hammond organ after being inspired by organists like Wild Bill Davis, Bill Doggett, and Jimmy Smith. His talent caught the attention of notable musicians like alto saxophonist Lou Donaldson, organist Jack McDuff, and guitarist George Benson, who hired him in 1964.

The Evening will feature a food menu from the Global Concepts Culinary Arts Cafe.
