The Brendan Lanighan Octet is an electrifying ensemble that consists of some of WNY and NYC’s finest young talent in the jazz and creative music worlds. Since the group’s inception in 2018, trombonist and composer, Brendan Lanighan, a Williamsville native and recent graduate of the Juilliard School, has dedicated himself to creating a performance experience that takes listeners on a journey that can be enjoyed by a wide range of music lovers.

A native of Buffalo, New York, trombonist, composer, and educator Brendan Lanighan’s talents have been recognized on the international stage. In the summer of 2017, he was selected as the winner of the International Trombone Festival’s J.J. Johnson Jazz Trombone Solo competition. It was during this same year that he was on tour with the Glenn Miller Orchestra, playing over 250 shows in the United States, Canada, and Japan. He also toured extensively as a sideman with the Gordon Webster Band, playing at some of the premier Lindy Hop dance events in the world.

Brendan earned a bachelor’s degree in jazz studies and education from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, NY in 2015. In May of 2020, he earned his masters degree in jazz trombone from the Juilliard School in New York City.

A dedicated educator, Lanighan recently stepped into the role of director of bands at Williamsville East High School, a school where he is a proud alum.
