Friday, January 23rd is Django Reinhardt‘s 116th birthday. Our custom is to celebrate with a concert featuring local and national acts playing in the style of jazz manouche (gypsy jazz) and music that represents gypsy culture as well as was an inspiration to Django Reinhardt’s playing and composing. This year we are happy to announce a line-up of 4 groups: a string quartet of faculty from the Buffalo String Works (buffalostringworks.org) will play selections of Ravel, Debussy and others (Django was very much influenced by the French composers). Local quintet Birds on a Wire (birdsonawire.band) will perform originals, some of Django’s compositions and music from Rajasthan to Andalucia. Local quartet Hot Club of Buffalo (hotclubofbuffalo.com) will recreate Django’s original quintette du Hot Club de France, and, headlining, we will host Sami Arefin and his trio Petite Fleur (www.facebook.com/samiarefinguitar) from Baltimore.
Admission is $25 (adv. at www.thecavebuffalo.com) and $30 at the door. Doors open at 6:30, concert 7 to 11 pm.
