Hallwalls is excited to launch the Sequester Series, a weekly concert featuring solo music performers from across the Western New York region. Every Tuesday night in February and March at 8:00 pm, Hallwalls will host a live performance from our theater streamed to you directly at www.hallwalls.org. Please join us from the comfort and safety of home and help us keep the music alive while supporting our region’s exceptional and diverse range of creative talent!

The Sequester Series – Martin Freeman

Welcome to the Sequester Series, a weekly concert featuring solo music performers from across the Western New York region. Martin Freeman – synthesizers

Martin Freeman is an improviser and tinkerer from Rochester who works predominantly with unpredictable electronics in performance and installation. He has taught electronics workshops for artists and musicians at the Eastman School of Music, Rhizome DC and Hearding Cats Collective. He’s a current MFA candidate and Instructor at UB’s Department of Art.

Nelson Rivera – saxophones

Saxophonist, percussionist Nelson Rivera has been a valued member of the Buffalo music scene for nearly two decades. A former student of Buffalo/Niagara Falls legend Chu Nero, Nelson has developed a personal sound on tenor and soprano combining astonishing technique with a natural lyricism. He performs with a wide variety of projects across a range of styles including Tim Clarke’s Soul-Tet, Sol y Sombra, Wooden Cities, Wendell Rivera’s Latin Jazz Ensemble, Buffalo Jazz Octet and many others.

The Sequester Series – Little Cake

Ana Vafai – piano, violin, voice

“A classically-trained multi-instrumentalist. A graduate of the Eastman School of Music. The lead singer of the award-winning hip-hop jazz-fusion group Radarada. A Buffalo Public School orchestra teacher. She’s Ana Vafai, better known as Little Cake.

What makes Ana Vafai a compelling artist is that she is a master of the tension between cerebral introspection and abject buffoonery. She’s a perceptive observer of humanity who’s not afraid to make a fool of herself for art’s sake. She’s been gifted with a voice that is equally at home with jazz and R&B as it is with musical theatre, and yet she’s not afraid to make her voice ugly, often shout-singing and making exaggerated vocalizations for dramatic effect. It’s bold and refreshing—honest in a manner that most artists, burdened by inhibition, are incapable of.

The Sequester Series – John Bacon

John Bacon, percussionist and composer, teaches percussion and Jazz at SUNY Fredonia, percussion at UB and is head of Jazz at Villa Maria College in Buffalo, NY. He holds a PhD in Music Composition from SUNY at Buffalo and a MM in Percussion Performance from Fredonia. His music has been performed by an eclectic array of musicians, including The Amherst Saxophone Quartet, Leroy Jenkins, the New Jazz Orchestra of Buffalo, the New York New Music Ensemble and the UB Percussion Ensemble. Performance credits include Lester Bowie, Roswell Rudd, Bobby Previte, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, Bobby Militello, Star People, the Buffalo Jazz Collective and the Buffalo Jazz Composers Workshop. His most recent CD is a piano trio recording, “Refractions”, featuring the music of Thelonious Monk with Michael McNeill and Danny Ziemann. John is a 2013 New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship Award recipient in Music/Sound and a New York State Council on the Arts Individual Artist Composer Commission with Christopher Jentsch 2015.
