Jazz at Kleinhans: John Pizzarelli Trio

Get ready for a time to remember as Grammy Award-winning guitarist and vocalist John Pizzarelli brings his swinging sophistication to Jazz at Kleinhans. Hailed by the Boston Globe for “reinvigorating the Great American Songbook and re-popularizing jazz,” Pizzarelli has spent more than four decades delighting audiences around the world with his inventive interpretations of timeless classics.

A masterful interpreter and storyteller, Pizzarelli has recently paid heartfelt tribute to his dear friend, the late Tony Bennett, while continuing to push forward with his acclaimed recent album Stage & Screen, which reimagines nearly a century of Broadway and Hollywood favorites. With his dynamic trio, he brings warmth, wit, and dazzling musicianship to every performance.

The trio features bassist Mike Karn and pianist Isaiah J. Thompson, two tremendous talents with whom Pizzarelli quickly discovered a scintillating chemistry, even with a two-year disruption to their touring schedule. While Karn has been working with Pizzarelli for the last seven years, Thompson joined the trio only three years ago, in late December 2019. A few months later, his tenure was interrupted by the pandemic, only for the band to pick up again in August 2021. Stage & Screen was recorded a few short months later.

Whether honoring Sinatra, Nat King Cole, or Tony Bennett—or finding fresh magic in the works of Paul McCartney, Joni Mitchell, and the Beatles—Pizzarelli creates concerts that are a joyful celebration of American Songbook music at its very best.
