Saxophonist, composer, recording artist, and educator Jimmy Greene has emerged as a positive young presence in the creative music world. His solo recordings, Live at Smalls (smallLive), Mission Statement (RazDaz/Sunnyside), The Overcomers’ Suite (NuJazz), Gifts and Givers (Criss Cross), True Life Stories (Criss Cross), Forever (Criss Cross), Brand New World (RCA Victor) and Introducing Jimmy Greene (Criss Cross) have been met with much critical acclaim. In fact, Tony Hall of Jazzwise Magazine calls Greene “ . . .without doubt one of the most striking young tenors of recent years.”

Greene was honored with the Governor’s Arts Award in Music from the State of Connecticut in 2013. Greene, the composer, won the prestigious 2005 ASCAP / IAJE Commission, a 2004 Chamber Music America New Works: Creation and Presentation Grant, a 2005 Artist Fellowship in Music Composition by the State of Connecticut, and a 2009 Artist Fellowship by the Greater Hartford Arts Council. His quartet performs at the Village Vanguard, Smalls and Smoke in New York, and has performed in festivals and jazz venues worldwide, including tour dates in Italy, Russia, Canada, Brazil, and Uruguay. As a sideman, Greene appears on 70 recordings, and has toured the world and recorded with the bands of Horace Silver, Freddie Hubbard, Tom Harrell, Harry Connick, Jr., and Lewis Nash, among many others.

Greene was the First Runner-Up the 1996 Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Saxophone Competition, and a 1997 Summa Cum Laude graduate of the Jackie McLean Institute of Jazz at the Hartt School. He holds a master’s degree in music education from Boston University and is a doctoral candidate in Jazz Arts Advancement at the Manhattan School of Music. He has taught at Purchase College – State University of New York, the Hartt School, and the University of Manitoba and is currently Assistant Professor of Music and Co-Coordinator of Jazz Studies at Western Connecticut State University.
