About:

Buffalo New York native John Hasselback III is quickly establishing himself as a lyrical trumpet soloist and composer in New York City’s vibrant jazz scene. Hasselback’s colorful sound is thoroughly informed by the lineage of jazz trumpet tradition, combining the sounds of yesterday with the sounds of tomorrow. “If one is known by the company he keeps, that’s a rather persuasive frame of reference. Hasselback wrote every number save one, the standard “Body and Soul,” showing from start to finish a keen ear for enticing bop-inspired melodies and rhythms. He plays as he writes, laying bare an affinity for such hard-blowing forebears as Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Donald Byrd, Blue Mitchell, Roy Hargrove and other legends on whose shoulders he stands.” 4 stars – Jack Bowers, All about Jazz . “John Hasselback III comes from a familiar family name of jazz artists. No doubt, carrying an innate sensibility in the artistry of music and jazz. After a few pivotal years of pursuing the master craftsmanship of jazz trumpet, composing, and arranging, he has elevated from innateness to uniqueness.” – Tony Zambito, Jazz Buffalo

About:
Jazz and the movies have had a long and loving relationship. Bessie Smith’s movie “St. Louis Blues” and the Duke Ellington “short” “Black and Tan Fantasy” are early examples of jazz tunes inspiring the narrative of moving images. Many films utilized jazz scores including film adaptations of musical theatre like “West Side Story”, the dark 1958 classic “I Want to Live” and the groundbreaking Brazilian themed romantic tragedy on the Orpheus myth “Black Orpheus”. In addition Jazzmusicians’ reinterpretations of movie music allow them to connect with audiences by performing well crafted songs that their audiences know and love. The ensemble has arranged music from “The Wizard of Oz”, “West Side Story”, “The King and I”, “Black Orpheus” and other classic movies.
