Music on the Inside (MOTI) uses music education and mentorships to foster creativity, new skills and hope for incarcerated youth. We are a 501(c)3 tax-exempt organization created to fulfill the urgent need for programs to give these young men and women inspiring role models, skills and encouragement to express themselves positively post-incarceration. Our goal is to play a part in reducing recidivism, improving morale, and lowering the financial and social costs of current criminal-justice.
Led by Alina Bloomgarden and famed jazz musician Wynton Marsalis, MOTI gives youth music instruction, experience with songwriting, and performance opportunities. Classes are taught by seasoned musicians who firmly believe in the power of music to grow confidence and teamwork. Students learn about the history of jazz, express themselves through hands-on experience making-music and connect with musicians as mentors.
Workshops include music education, songwriting, practice skills, and result in live performances and CDs of the students’ work.
