“Refractions” CD release by Michael McNeill, John Bacon and Danny Ziemann

“Refractions” featuring the compositions of Thelonious Monk, grew out of the Buffalo, NY area’s celebration of Monk’s 100th birthday, “Monk in Octoberfest”. Rather than being a recreation of one of the programs of that series this recording is another creative expression of Monk and his contribution to the development of jazz repertoire. The recording takes a wide-ranging view of Monk’s music including well-known tunes like “Straight No Chaser” and “Monk’s Mood” with lesser known gems “Light Blue” and “Ugly Beauty”. The group presents unexpected interpretations of these intrepid works while maintaining the sense of swing and group.
