SMOKE SCREENS PRESENTS:THE WAYNE ESCOFFERY QUARTET

wayneescoffery

FRIDAY FEBRUARY 26 – SUNDAY FEBRUARY 27 / LIVE STREAMED / 8PM EST

Wayne Escoffery (tenor saxophone)
Peter Bernstein (guitar)
Ugonna Okegwo (bass)
Johnathan Blake (drums)

“Every time he plays, saxophonist Wayne Escoffery brings a sense memory that includes early days in the church choir in New Haven, Connecticut; the wisdom and watchful eye of the legendary Jackie McLean; time spent with The Mingus Big Band, Ron Carter and Tom Harrell.
– Gary Walker, WBGO.org

Saxophonist Wayne Escoffery leads an exquisite quartet—with guitarist Peter Bernstein, bassist Ugonna Okegwo and drummer Johnathan Blake–to help celebrate his birthday belatedly (It’s February 25th.) Escoffery was a protégé of the great Jackie McLean and he faithfully channels his former mentor’s powerful approach. All About Jazz says, “Not since the works of bassist Charles Mingus and saxophonist John Coltrane has there been music so charged with emotion and so engulfed in spirituality” with Stereogum adding “the leader’s playing has thoughtfulness and muscle in equal measure.” In recent years, he’s released a series of acclaimed recordings including last year’s The Humble Warrior.
