Steve Davis celebrates his April 14th birthday with two nights of livestreamed concerts. He is leading a stirring quintet featuring vibraphonist Steve Nelson, pianist David Hazeltine, bassist Gerald Cannon and drummer Joe Farnsworth on Friday and Willie Jones III on Saturday. JazzTimes reports, “(Steve) has established himself as one of the most accomplished and lyrical improvisers on his instrument as well as a prolific composer. Downbeat adds, “Davis thoughtfully balances modernism, lyricism and drive—as a writer and a player.” These performances reunite Davis with Nelson who appeared on two of the trombonist’s celebrated recordings, Portrait in Sound and Vibe Up!.
