Stu ‘n Avery – Jazz Guitar and more

Avery and younger brother Ethan started playing in venues with their father Stu Weissman at the tender ages of 10 and 12. Initially a young guitarist, Avery switched to playing bass in his early teens with various ensembles but often accompanying his dad.

Both Avery and 2024 Jazz Buffalo Poll winner Stu are true Pausa veterans, having worked together to accompany such diverse artists as Mary Ramsey (10,000 Maniacs), Saranaide (Sara Rodriguez) and DeeAnn Dimeo, Janice Mitchell, and Elena Izquierdo. Individually they have worked with Cheryl Ferris, Hannah Stanek-Chu, the Wordism events, and others. Stu has led a number of his own Pausa projects including the Western swing ensemble “Swing St.”, “A Jazz Guitar Retrospective” with Ed Croft, “The Other Side of Drumming” with Abdul Rahman and Reggie Evans, a night of Americana with Sally Schaefer, the duo with Avery, and a trio with Avery and Nelson Rivera.

Stu embraces the challenge of presenting a freshened repertoire and objective to each Pausa Art House performance, and this one is no exception. Avery will be featured on a number of vocal selections ranging from James Taylor to Hoagie Carmichael, playing bass, guitar, and 7 string guitar. Stu will also be presenting new vocal additions.

Instrumentals will range from the music of the 30s – 80s, with father and son playing archtop guitars on Bob Wills western swing, Django Reinhardt, and Charlie Christian contributions. Stu will at times switch to bass to highlight Avery’s artistry on jazz standards and smooth jazz offerings. From Jobim to the Beatles, this program will keep the audience engaged, toe tapping, and smiling.
