AFA launched the On_Line Salon Series on May 1 on Zoom with saxophonist Tony Malaby and pianist Angelica Sanchez. The livestream series features performances, a conversation with host Patricia Nicholson, and an open Q&A. The concerts are free, but we encourage donations to help fund performer fees.

The late great William Connell told me that Warren Smith is an angel. Any group with him is coming from a place of love for the music and each other. There is an instant unity present. Daniel Carter is now a living legend, having played thousands of sessions all over NYC seeking a common humanity in literally everyone he meets. Daniel takes his own personal symphony with him wherever he goes. He’s still on the front line of creative music in 2020. Mara Rosenbloom has been on fire in New York City for a decade now, her piano trio described in the New York Times as containing bristling provocation and full-bore group improvising. As for me, I’m currently trying to find out just what sound looks like as a I try to paint the sky with the sounds coming from my trumpet bell. – Matt Lavelle

Drummer Bobby Kapp first expanded the possibilities of free jazz and poetry in the 1960s with artists like Marion Brown, Noah Howard, and Gato Barbieri. Now nearly 60 years later, he continues to innovate with two of the music’s most important current artists, Willam Parker and Matthew Shipp.
