In this gathering brought together by Arts for Art, we will improvise. Each of us will bring our own language to communicate with each other and the world about what it means to be a human being in 2020.

The late great William Connell told me that Warren Smith is an angel. Any group with him is coming from a place of love for the music and each other. There is an instant unity present. Daniel Carter is now a living legend, having played thousands of sessions all over NYC seeking a common humanity in literally everyone he meets. Daniel takes his own personal symphony with him wherever he goes. He’s still on the front line of creative music in 2020. Mara Rosenbloom has been on fire in New York City for a decade now, her piano trio described in the New York Times as containing bristling provocation and full-bore group improvising. As for me, I’m currently trying to find out just what sound looks like as a I try to paint the sky with the sounds coming from my trumpet bell.  – Matt Lavelle
